Hi on my TE 610 manual in the maintenance pages ,it refers to two bag filters that have to be cleaned at regular intervals.These bag filters are located behind the left and right engine covers.My bike has about 18000 km and my mechanic has never cleaned them.I m about to service my bike in a few km.Should i inspect and clean those filters too or they are of minor importance?
Most people do those every 2-10 oil changes.. I've done mine maybe 3 times in almost 10,000 miles.. Only found anything on them the first time..
I clean the left side bag filter every oil change. Clutch-side rarely has anything on it, so will probably check that every 3k.
The left one has its own little cover and can be cleaned without taking off the whole side cover. Luckily that is the one that seems to catch most of the junk. When I checked the right one, there was nothing in it. I am fairly certain the PO never cleaned it. I am not going to mess with it again until I have the right cover off for another reason.
So i should clean only the left one.Where is the little cover located?Is that the one small piece of metal that is assemblembled with two screws next to the lft engine cover?
Yes, only two bolts to contend with. If it is the bike's 1st service, I would still check the right bag filter since others have found stuff in it.. but don't be surprised if there's nothing.
The 630 has the same filters. The right side on mine hasn't had a speck in it for 3000 miles. I have checked twice. Once at 300 miles, once at 3000. The left side has junk in it at every oil change, and I've changed the oil a lot more than you have to (I had an oil leak I was trying to fix).
Not an '08, but here's a snapshot of the left side bag filter from my '06. This is at 850 miles. I am guessing it has not been cleaned before. Does this look pretty normal for that mileage? The right side was perfectly clean. I found a few aluminum chips in the paper filter when I dissected it.
Yeah, looks ok. Is that a melted plastic-y crap? When my bike was new, (and I was freaking out about it) George told me some of the insulation stuff off the stator comes off normally.
I dunno what the Alum could be except maybe just some machining slag from the case manufactuing process If your clutch basket looked good I think I'd not sweat it.
I am not too concerned, everything looks pretty good to me. The fine aluminum in the paper filter just looked like typical stuff I would expect to find at the first filter change. This bike was owned by a guy who left it at his vacation home in Colorado, but did not have much opportunity to go on vacation during the past 4 years thus the low miles. I am getting it sorted out a little at a time, but wishing I could just put gas in and ride. I did get it out on Sunday before I drained the oil and found some dirt road close to our subdivision in a construction zone.... Man 75 on dirt is pretty cool......I must admit 30 years since I have ridden an off road capable bike is just waaaayyyy too long.
