te to sm conversion

i did a search and didnt find anything on this topic[i thought this was common]ive got an 08 te450 and found wheels from an 08 smr 450,the back is no prob but the sprocket is smaller,but the front rotor from the smr wont work with the the caliper from the te.i called gp cycles and was told there is no bracket to extend my stock caliper,to the larger street rotor,and the stock te rotor will need a bit of work to fit on the smr wheel,and its probably a bit too small for the street.i thought this wasnt hard to do but he said in 08 there were some changes that made it harder,anyone have experince with this ???,thanks

You can run the rotor (but) you have to drill out the mounting holes because the SM is a 6MM and the TE is a 5MM mount screw. (I think thats the MM sizes.) I don't think you really have to worry about the 270 to 320 conversion if your not concerned. Look at it this way, if you ride the TE on the Street are you worried about the braking power? Now when you put the rotor back to the TE wheel you will need a spacer for the change,(or) you could tap the TE wheel to the larger MM hole. I have not ran in to a person that has a bracket to convert the TE to SM Caliper, if so, you would need the complete SM set up.

I have considered doing this on my 630, but the costs are pretty prohibitive. If I did do it, I'd just get a second TE rotor and drill it out to fit the SM wheel. That gives you the easiest swap time. The braking differences probably aren't all that much.

right i think id just but a second rotor,but im not shure the te rotor has enough stopping power,?

If Im not mistaken the bolt sizes are 6mm(TC/TXC/TE) and 8mm(SMR), rather than 5mm and 6mm..

The braking differences are SIGNIFICANTLY different. The caliper has much more leverage on a 320mm rotor. If you are just doing light street riding and not racing, you can usually get by on just a smaller (280mm?) rotor. But if you start looking into racing, stunting, or just plain riding hard, the larger 320mm is a wise investment. Brake fade is not fun, and you will experience that if you push too hard on a smaller/not so strong brake setup like the 280mm rotor.
Jcarlson9, There are several brackets used for SM conversions. You bike may not have a specific caliper bracket listed for it, but there may be other years/models that could cross over and fit your bike as well. Can you measure the distance between the two mounting holes on your fork bottom? I have a couple extra brackets that may work..

so there is a bracket available for the 06-09 TE per the link you provided. Part # 331-2001X

thanks for the info,i just need to figure out if i have the bucks [about a grand] for the whole set up.i wouldnt do much super moto,when i get time i always try to head for the mountians.[shure would be nice to have both though !]

Watch ebay for wheels. There were a few husky sets on there a day or so ago..

Or you could always buy some sportsman tires. I think Pirelli makes some street tires for stock size MX tires. That way you can give it a go and decide if ya want to buy some 17's
