About to do my first oil change on my 09 510te. Wanted to know what brand and weight oil people are using and specifically what volume it took. I will be using a scotts stainless steel oil filter.

I just picked my '09 TE 510 up yesterday. Awesome bike! I can't figure out from the manual what the oil capacity is. It mentions 1.8 qt 'transmission' ...? How many miles did you put on the bike before the first change?

I leave 300ml in the second of two 946ml bottles of 20w50 Amsoil MOTORCYCLE oil - level ends up midway between to markers on sight-glass with filter change.

If you feel like it - pull the decompressor lever and spin the motor with the kick lever 30 times (i use my hand) and this will give you the same level as a dry start and 10 min wait.

    Works for me.

Excellent choice on the TE 510. I have been running the Scotts SS filter since the first oil change, less then 100 miles. I eyeball about a liter and a half of the Motorex 10w60. The sight glass sure is handy. Enjoy that beast. :D

The SS filter has been working great for me. I have switched to Shell Rotella 5/40w synthetic and that is working good for me to.

I use a rubber cork from the hardware store. I plug the opening of the filter and soak it in some simple green purple degreaser and then spray it off with the garden hose to shed any debris. A dry off with the air compressor and thats that. My DRZ has a SS filter to. They are well worth it imho.
