Hi Guys, this is my first post so be gentle. I bought my first Husky, a 2011 TE630 last week. Loving it to bits. Fitted Rox Risers today, and am waiting on the power up kit to arrive any day. My question is about tank options. I don't like/want/need the Safari 26 litre tank. Ideally 18-20 litres would be perfect. I wonder if anyone has modified the IMS non FI 610 tank to fit the 630? At about $350 delivered I'm happy to spend the cash if I know it can be done. What about other tank options, are there any? Thanks Homer
I know what you mean about the Safari tanks - I've had nothing but leaking problems with mine. Not sure there are any good alternatives. Never seen or heard of anyone getting the IMS tank on the EFI bikes, seems it would be gnarly to mount the fuel pump. A Rotopax or Nomad tank (http://nomadtanks.com.au/Tanks.php) or something along those lines might be one direction to go in?
In fairness to Safari tanks, there were quite a few who had fuel leaks with the stock tank. Mine and my buddy's Safari haven't had any problems. With my TCI rack I can slip a Rotopax on each rear footpeg and strap to rack arms coming to the footpegs. Keeps weight low and central. I did this several times with the stock tank, not yet w/ the Safari. .
No leaks on my safari tank and it has been out in temperatures over 100 F in Morocco and below 22 F over is the sunny UK with no issues. Doubles up as radiator protection quite well, tested on more than one occasion.
Homer, There really is no good option for other tanks. If you wanted to use the older 610 tank, you would need an external efi fuel pump providing 45psi to the fuel rail (adjustable pressure regulator with a return line plumbed to the tank somehow?). .
If you carry anything of any real weight on the rear rack & ride off road the subframe WILL snap. Mind did as shown here: http://www.cafehusky.com/threads/te-630-sub-frame-mod.22225/page-3 It was fixed, but not properly, so snapped again a couple of years later. Fixed that time using Chris Brown's method shown in the same thread and no problems since. The Rotopax would be too much weight to carry without this reinforcement. It may not snap straight away, depends on whether your jumping the bike, slamming through ruts & corregations etc, but it will eventually fail. If it isn't reinforced already, you should get it done. Northside Motorcycles at Artarmon arranged for mine to be fixed.
Yup Yup and Yup. Plus if you go this route you'll have a more expensive and even uglier setup than a Safari. _
I have bought a red Safari, unmounted so far. For me the decision was based on locations of fuel in back country BC. I did have dual 1 gallon rotopax but wanted to move the weight forward off the rear subframe, also previously strengthened.
