I went to an off road park today where the exhaust has to be tested(96 DB or less) My 08 stock pipe nearly failed, to the point of the DNR officer debating whether or not to give me the sticker.

Im not powered up, but want to be. I want to be for the reasons of- less weight(the stock can feels like a 3 core brick) better fueling of the lower RPM areas where it currently stumbles. It stumbles to the point of nearly having 2 horrific crashes riding today in areas that had boulder stricken, constant directional changing hill climbs. Im totally loosing my confidence in these technical climbs, that I love, because of this problem.

Sooooo, if I power up, I expect to have a smoother running low end, but if I cant keep the DB down, wont be able to ride in these areas anyway.

Whats a technical trail loving, loud pipe hating husky rider to do?

(P-U, completely plug the outlet, drill 1/8" hole for exhaust to escape....)

Just thought Id add this, it does not look like much, but it kinda shows how the hill twists with rocks all over.

And of course the rocks are way bigger than the camera makes them appear:rolleyes::smirk:

you could put in a exhaust db killer then take it out win you get a bit into the woods?

your sound issues will get worse- and the 2008 PU can, does not apparently allow for the DB killer- you'd need to Modify one- I believe someone modded an 08 insert to be like the 09 dbkiller. I did about the same thing from the sounds of it but for an 09. You could cut the 09 dbkiller- but it may not be long enough to decrease the DB (leap of faith). I wonder if you can get the 2009- slip on?:mid pipe and muffler. Or look at the FMF?

Its hard to say-(guarantee) if doing the PU will solve your issues (but depends on exacly what problems you are having). The pipe itself does not necessarily clean up the bottom end- taking out the o2 sensor can help with responce (systme not thinking and making trims). I am PU'd, My stalling issues have been related to loose coil mainly. It was resolved. Then Saturday- I stalled in tight trail and went doun do to it-about 10 times. Sunday I dumped the fuel- checked the coil connections, cleaned the spark plug. Rode it and could not get it to replicate the stalling- all is well again.

I would go over the whole bike- looking for other problems- then concider a PU option that is gives you a 96 or less db option. hook up to Ibeat- and go from there. Some have had no issues- low rpm responce/flameout- some have seamed to really chase this issue and found no solution. Frustrating for them- mine seems to be forgiving usually but I couldn't say why for sure... combo of many things.:excuseme:

mikezx, im afraid the DB itself will not be quiet enough.

HUSKYnXJnWI, We've talked about this a bit before. It seems like my stock pipe is louder this year (45hrs on it) than last year. I talked with George at Uptite, who makes his own that will accept his SA and DB killer. But then I have to get the bigger tank too- so I don't have to refuel at the end on my driveway. Thats getting a bit too $, however will probably be my solution.

FMF does not make a pipe for the 08's either. I hate to say it, but my 50 state legal WR250R injection was spot on from idle to WOT. Too bad it was heavy, slow and lacked in quality parts. I also think this is just the nature of this bike, that while may be improvable, is what it is...... I have not cleaned the plug yet, ill do that tonight.

Poopy, thanks, what was wrong with it?

    Hey Jason

I live in MN also and am wondering which offroad park you were at?

Personally I feel the DNR guy was just giving you some $hIT about the sticker. From everything I have read the 08 with power up was meeting the 96 db test.

Ok another solution to part of the problem: sound, get a dbDawg.... and spark arrestor screen. Take out your stock SA and measure the ID witout stock SA and order away.

I wish the stock 2008 (nonPU and PU) had easer solutions. I wish you could take out the CAT like the 09 or cut it out- I am curious if the headers to mid pipe are really different- maybe the FMF is not "listed" for the 08 but fits the same- be worth making some calls on- seems a good dealer would know.

I emailed FMF and got no responce. Another prob is the 08 can cannot be repacked either, welded solid. Are the 09's repackable?

oldhuskychuck, I love rocks, that pic is just one of many area's.(your rocks are still bigger though)

Jason, the 2009 is repackable- I assume the 08 PU would be too. Man that 08 stock can gives lots of reasons NOT to be on a bike- I'd get rid of it: not due to wanting a more open exhaust necessarily but: lack of insert interchangability, weight, CAT, and nonservicable.

My buddy runs the stock can on his 08-te510 with PU Mode-efi- no problems yet- but I see that cat is going to block up and the honeycomb will be full.

Do you live in the Twin Cities or up in the Iron Range? WI offers much more opportunity to ride and I've never had a problem meeting any sound restrictions with my 08 TE510 equipment with the power up kit. Nemadji right north of Hinkley offers some great riding for enduro bikes within MN.

2008 exhaust apparently is not the same as 2009*2010-
you would have to get the Arrow Power Up kit- Then if your noise levels are to high mod an insert or purchase a dbDawg. My 09TE450 tested at 99db with the stock spark arrestor with a calibrated meter tested at correct RPMs for this model. I wouldn't expect the 08 and 08Arrow Pu to perform any different but there's always a slight chance. Big differences in who and how it was tested. I tested myself and failed myself.

I'd like to know why Husky stopped using the mufflers they had on the 06-07's.........
Those were pretty quiet from the factory and worked good.

My 07 has never been repacked and still blows ~86db in tests at events.

I agree about the older mufflers.

The 2010 I test rode is simply too loud for the trails. I happened across a new 2009 TXC250 and I am tempted to pick that bike up and save some money over a 2010. Tough call to make.

When the cat is blocked, does that mean the exhaust sys will be plugged, or just the cat rendering useless?

Fast1, I live near the nemadji area. Its just not open yet. As far as WI, they don't register motorcycles, which means their illegal in most area's unless specifically stated otherwise from the DNR. (I also ride the Iron River WI area)

The cat looks like a honeycomb and will fill with carbon slowly blocking the entire exhaust- rendering your cat and exhaust useless. This happens in theory if you take out the O2 sensor- and run stock pipe with CAT- like my buddy. I will warn him too.

WI has no "trail" registration like Mich... we therefor really have no public trails- ATVs have trails everywhere- Problem is money from our license plates don't go towards trails so the trails don't see the money for mainenence- Sticker registration would add this.We have people working on that.Wohma is largly working on this with some other individuals. Its a long process... This is why the few trails we have and the few clubs we have that put on events are so important in WI.
