So here's the sitch. My honey has ridden the 449 on several occasions and has grown rather fond of it. Other than it being too tall for her (even a 5'11" Norwegian Goddess has her limits) which is easy enough to remedy, she is starting to outgrow the old IT as she appreciates the power, suspension and brakes on the Husky.

I recently took an adventure with the ZipTy crew and she was kind enough to drive chase as we scouted some cool routes for future Ride Open Tours. She expressed that she would REALLY like to do some DS trips with me and was missing being out there with us. So the discussion came up about what to do about it. Let's get me a new bike and she will ride the 449!

So now, other than trying to get my arms around spending close to $12K for a freekin dirt bike I have a decision to make. Husky 501 or Beta 500? Of course Ty looked at me like I might be special when I posed this question, but this is a big decision for me. The Beta is close to $1000 less to start and there's no 4CS to fix, though I do know this guy, but I digress. The transmissions seem different in that the Beta is fairly close ratio while the Husky has a good low 1st and 90+ mph 6th. I can put a big tank on either, etc, etc.

I really like the feel of the Beta as it's got the Italian DNA and obviously is familiar. I like to be different, which is why the Orange bike ain't even in the running. The Beta comes with a Trail Tech Voyager stock. I can get either from the same dealer that's very close. I have not ridden either one myself.

Anything new coming in 2017 for either? I can't find any used 501 bikes because I guess nobody wants to sell theirs yet. ARRRGGHHHH! HELP

Yeah, that's kind of the trade. The Husky feels more cramped in the cockpit but the pegs seem kind of high on the Beta. That would translate to harder to stand.

Step one , which one gives you that little happy feeling when you look at it ? Step 2 which one do you think you will be able to find parts for 7.53 years from now ? Step 3, buy them both and send me the one you are not riding to test out in the single track, just 2 help you out of course. Step 4, I am also married 2 a hotty that supports my hobby- send her flowers before you buy both, and send me one. That said, you're welcome, and thanks in advance.:lol: ( feel free to send 449 also- I am such a giver.)

Serious note though, I have a buddy who bought a Beta 430 he is in love ! I have another buddy who just bought a husky 250, 350, and a 501- all non s stuff, he also is in love. That said stuff is tight up here, if I ever get a chance 2 ride with them will let you know how they work, if beta boy keeps up or beets me on the 300, Beta is great, if I can keep up with Husky king of 3, husky sucks, if husky king of 3 KICKS MY ASS, all is normal. Sons of beaches anyway.

Beta's transmission is real close to the FE's. Beta's suspension is better stock then the FE's but after a revalve the FE's is much better. Fuel mileage on the 501 is much better then the Beta and both motors should run a long time. DNA,,, Italian is location for manufacturing and nothing else is common or should be compared. No different then comparing a EXC525 to a 2016 XCF-W 500. Sure they are both orange but very different.

FE's don't have many set-up issues that the Beta has. Beta's needs to have the wiring connectors check because they use a cheap connector. Bar mounted switches, horn clutch/shifting causes some issues and overall build quality is just a tad lower then the FE. Flip side with the Beta you don't have flame outs, overheating and other lean running issues (2016 MY). Beta's are more planted and don't have the twitchy light front at speeds.

Ride them both if you can because doing that will highlight each bike's advantages then decide.

Overall I really like the Beta.... To me it came down to my bad knee and with the peg and seat location made it hard to transition from sitting to standing....

I recently just noticed that the Beta 4t's have separate crank/clutch oil. I remember Honda and KTM (maybe others, idk) tried that. Is the separate oil a good thing?

Zip-Ty knows the Italian Husky's as well as anyone... If you can wait for the SWM RS 500 to make it here it looks like you can save a lot of cash over the other Euro bikes.

The SWM is quietly lurking in the background of my list. It's just that until they pass all the homologation tests to get into the US, it's not really clear when they will be available. But yeah, $4000-$5000 difference is nothing to scoff at.

And since I know this guy at Zipty, it's definitely a consideration.

^ The TE 510 is a beast! 4th gear throttle only wheelies. Actually pretty light for it's displacement. It handles the omg crazy fast speeds wonderfully imo. Look at the dominance Nick Burson/Zip-Ty did in the desert on the Husky 510! It does have a lot of engine braking and the vibes will give you a case of numb nuts on the blacktop. In the dirt I don't notice the vibes really. The engine braking isn't that big of deal to me as I have only ever owned big bore 4t's. The vibes can be fixed with a counter balancer install (maybe SWM put then back in?). The SWM wont have the brush catcher tank shrouds, yeah! No kick starter on the SWM's either, which is probably a good thing as it saves weight and keeps the case from exploding from a bad kick.

I am a big fan of the Cagiva/Husky/SWM big bore motors. Some may say they are slow revving old tech, but heck on them. They hold a lot of oil, simple vale adjustments, and are bullet proof reliable if you don't neglect them. Sure the new Euro bikes may be lighter and faster, but the (speculated) price difference is to great for the difference. I hope SWM gets here soon! I would love to get the RS 300! My girlfriends '08 TE 250/310 is magic in the s/t compared to the stump pulling 510. Braaap!

Yep, there is usually one at the shop getting some work. The Sumo counter balancer sounds like a great idea. Robertaccio has one and he loves it. Plus the US import agent is literally right down the road from Ty, so I imagine I'll see one in the flesh soon enough.

The benefit of separate oil chambers is cleaner oil to the motor. With one chamber you can argue larger volume over more case surface equals cooler under normal running. Single chamber just means you need to change oil more often then duel chamber.

This was the start of her riding addiction, she now rides a big bad ttr 125 - which suprising 2 me works real good for her in the N.Idaho tight stuff. Now back to real concern- any news on new bike Huskynoobe?

Still in the wait and see stage right now. We've got a lot of stuff on our plate for the moment. I haven't been riding in over a month and looks like it will be that way for a few more weeks. I figure that it's to my advantage as 17s start arriving and 16s get lower and lower in price since they will be the "old bike". I still want to see what SWM has going too.
