What? A GPS can't be beautiful? :D Have used Delorme paper maps for years. The best. Unlimited access to web maps for 30$ per year. It appears this jewel keeps track of co riders or a support vehicle via a line of site radio tracking feature. However, it's a little unclear whether users can message each other via Satellite/Spot device to device when the line of site tracking feature is unworkable. If it does, all I can say is Sold!

    Check out the Garmin Rino.

It doesn't have Spot, but it's got a longer range.

I looked at the Rino. It works on a fmrs/gmrs radio and is essentially line of sight. As long as the people you're tracking are relatively close, it should work. It is limited by terrain features and distance. The sat com would have no such limitations. Theoretically, you could message a support truck 20 miles away or anyone halfway around the globe.
