Is it necessary to disconnect the cable from the throttle assy to remove the throttle tube from handlebar for cleaning?

After a spending a couple of hours learning to ride sand washes, and being dumped, my throttle tube/grip now sounds like there's a bunch of sand in there I need to clean out.

That would be the easiest way to go, but I suppose you could unbolt the handle bars and just loosen the throttle assembly and slide it off whole.
