Despite the stock dual being pretty, I want to replace them with a single for several reasons including weight. The options out there are not all that appealing to me either from cost or design. I spoke to Bob Murray of Thunder Alley & I'm planning to take my Terra by his shop next week. The plan is to build a single SS exhaust with a Krizzman spark arrestor. I've used Bob before & he does beautiful work. His estimate is about 1/2 of the GPR system. I'll report back once it's on the bike.
I'm having it done Tuesday the 16th, I will let you guys know what I think. This is an example of his work, the beauty is in the performance
Which I'd really like to see a Dynotune spec sheet for to actually PROVE numbers. With an extra 8hp out of that BMW donk already, it's highly unlikely that any pipe will be able to increase "performance" (apart from just noise), regardless who made it. Happy to be proven wrong and see another 10hp
My comment was about the aesthetics, his work is all custom hand made. It's not going to be a finished appearing as a production unit. It will be lighter, it won't retain as much heat, it will free up some space & I'm certain it will run better. IMHO the stock mufflers are another item made to a low price point around a really nice engine. The dual pipes are pretty, but after seeing the insides of a stock muffler, with the little drilled holes like a Brigg & Stratton lawn mower muffler I was really not impressed. I don't expect or really even need a big HP increase, but as with the tuning I do expect an overall better running bike. The weight savings on a 400lb bike is really not going to be something you feel when riding, I very well may use the vacant space on the right side for something useful when travelling. I had Bob build a complete custom exhaust for my KTM450XC that was bored & stroked to 600cc's, custom cam, big valves etc. His system had a much fatter curve & was not obnoxious at all. It had a very deep rumble vs the FMF or stock KTM muffler.
Or drop a few hp (not that it matters) like with nearly every aftermarket can on a 650 V-Strom....as said, no figures, no proof, no argument.
Although I'm not counting on an substantial gains, large bore thumpers consistently benefit from a better flowing muffler XRR's uncorked pick up substantial HP, XRL's pick up, DR's benefit
Sad to say, we just couldn't get the sound level down to an acceptable level for me. If I was more of a hooligan, it had a nice deep tone, but IMHO this bike is too smooth/comfortable to allow to be made loud
Bummer. So did you just put the stock setup back on? I started the bike once with the mufflers removed and it was very loud for sure.
It's sitting there with a beautiful single head pipe & me thinking. I've used a GSXR can on a couple of projects including my XR650R. Power was very good & yet very quiet. I'm going to do some measuring & possibly try to graft one on. If that doesn't pan out I'll throw the semi stock mufflers back on & leave it alone Of interest on the initial test ride it had a lean stumble initially rolling the throttle on. The auto tune corrected it quickly. It lifted & carried the front wheel a few inches off the ground in second (15/47 gearing) without clutching or any attempt to lift the nose, just throttle. That's not a dyno, but it hasn't done that previously.
Although it would take some fab work to get the fit, has anyone tried a G650x can like this: http://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/scorpion-factory-oval-slip-on-exhaust-bmw-g650x-2007-2009 AFAIK the GX's are the closest 650 engine as far as tuning and output goes.
Soooo...one can only gain hp with a bolt-on pipe, but loosing hp is a fueling issue, I got that right? Well, well...there's something new you learn everyday.
