Hi - my TR 650 Terra has done 14,500 Km - at about 11000km oil started to weep from the grommet on top of the stator cover - Bike is maintained by a husky dealer. The dealer has tried resealing a few times - the oil leak has reduced but is still there - anyone else had this problem with the TR650?
Mine has done only 2500 km and I have had a slight oil leak from the lower part of the gasket on the Stator Cover since day one. Originally it was fine clear oil but now it has got more discoloured. I would estimate the amount lost would probably be half a thimble full over the past 3 months, so small a leak that I couldnt be bothered with the hassle of taking the cover off and possibly damaging the gasket even more. However I would be interested in the reason for this leak and if any others have similar experiences.
Hi Mark , I had mine back to the dealer 3 times they tried a range of different sealants - still leaking ( but less ) . No one can explain why the leak happen - probably just a grommet failure. Its a 50 cent grommet but the grommet is wedded to the wires which are part of the stator i.e an expensive fix. I am curious to know how many other TR 650's have the same problem.
Bumping this thread. Joined CafeHusky a few days ago specifically because this problem is driving me nuts, hoping someone with a good solution will chime in, or point me to another thread. I have a TR650 Strada I bought new in January 2014. Recently, at about 20,000 mi on the odo, it started leaking oil through/around/near the grommet/wires on the stator cover. (also having trouble getting the oil filter to seal properly, but that's a separate issue). Tried cleaning it up and using RTV silicone (permatex black, oil resistant). Still leaked. Took it apart and cleaned it up better and tried again, applying a lot more permatex to the inside and outside, and made sure to give it time to cure well. It still leaks, but less. Suggestions? The wires are integral to the stator, and the grommet is slipped over the wires, so you can't just replace the grommet. (WHY on earth was it built this way. I have asked that question 1000x about this bike. Its like this the whole way through.) Can I rant about how I love the concept of this bike, but the build quality is complete crap? (I have a long, long list of other issues.)
I was misled in my first post on this thread, my oil leak was not coming from the Stator casing but just behind it. Originally it was thought to be the oil filter o-ring not sealing correctly and the oil was actually travelling through the paint coating and appearing nearer to the stator casing. The bike shop I took it to thought they fixed it and so did I until it re-appeared some months later without anyone having touched a thing. After months of messing around trying to find the source of the leak I traced it to a defect in the crankcase aluminium moulding in the area of the oil filter casing - more crap build quality issues Having zero dealer support I set about 'fixing' it myself and short of replacing the RH crankcase I had very limited options. My fix is described here and so far it is working very well. http://www.cafehusky.com/threads/pita-oil-leak.81268/#post-567273 Back to the OP and the Stator oil leak around the wires. I have looked at the drawings and as far as I can see, there should not be any oil in this section, however I may be wrong. It looks to me as if there is an oil seal on the crankshaft/bearing part but I am then puzzled as to why there is a breather tube going up to the airbox. The engine also has a breather pipe from the valve cover up to the top of the oil tank, but I see no actual crankcase breather. So...can any other owners offer up other ideas as to what is the actual arrangement, maybe unscrew the plug in the middle of the stator casing and see if there is indeed oil in this section or not? Obviously if there is oil where there is not supposed to be then the bike has a problem and would suspect the RH crankshaft oil seal to have failed.
I had oil push out of that rubber grommet when my breather hose got pinched on the trail. As soon as it was unpinched it has not leaked a drop.
So it looks like the pinched breather hose was the problem for me. Can't believe I missed something that simple *hangs head in shame.* Thank you GrumpyShamurai. I had looked at that a long time ago, but not recently. Because of your comment, I looked harder, and lo and behold, it was pinched after all. I've ridden 2-3 times since making really sure that hose was not pinched, including a long-ish day ride, and the bike has not leaked. While I stand by my earlier comments shaming the general build quality if this bike, I don't get to blame the bike for this. The oil leak was mostly my fault. As part of fixing the air filtration issue and messing with the airbox, I ended up disconnecting that hose from the airbox, and never put it back (put a filter on the end, then promptly forgot about said hose while I paid attention to other issues). My guess is that sometime over the last 18,000 miles, that free end moved around enough to cause the hose to pinch. That must be when the oil leak started. Probably ought to secure that hose better. This was a classic "fixing one problem made another problem." Just glad its no longer leaking.
The question is......was there really any problem to be fixed in the first instance ? At least you found the cause and it has not done too much damage to the bike or your pocket.
