Trail tech speedometer on 87 WR 430

Thanks to Everfree I've a speedometer on my 87 WR 430 again. Only a couple of parts needed sorted. I needed to fashion a holder for the trigger magnet and a bracket for the pickup device.

BTW, do you know how to install a original Husky speedometer?
One of my Auto's has a dial speedo that wasn't connected when I bought it. The speedo cable has a threaded cap but the front axle unit is not threaded. All the parts seem original. I thought I was missing parts, but the manual doesn't show anything missing.

So I gotta ask the probably obvious question, is it a kit for a specific bike you have on the 430? Or generic trail tech kit?

It's a generic trail tech kit. Endurance II model. Seems easy to mount, just took a bit of creative thinking. I hooked the power wires to the A/C light circuit so the back light on the speedo lights up when the engine is running. The speedometer works either way. Seems durable so far. I don't know that a model specific kit exists for the 430.

Dave, mine was threaded on the top but secured via a screw / socket at the axle drive unit. I replaced my damaged cable/ housing assembly with one made for a Harley sportster. I had to transfer the original cable housing ends to the new cable. I can send this to you if you like. Sounds like it would fit your axle drive unit. My axle unit has been modified to fit a 20mm axle. Not sure I have a spare that will fit the 15mm axle but I will check and see. Stock speedo cable units seem difficult to come by around these parts. Let me know?

there is a securing screw that passes above an indent on the drive end to stop it coming out. pretty agricultural but works. speedo's are too $$ leave on a dirt bike. I have my 84 speedo still with 8km's on it. keeping it for the full resto on the 400 one day

Let me post some pictures and take measurements of what I have. That should help and see if it would work.

surprise, I think mine is a later model. Cable has a threaded cap at drive end, but no threads on the axle unit. Strange.
I have noticed that Husky used different speedo setups through the years.

My speedo only has 269 miles it. It would be great if my 86 430 Auto had less than 300 miles on it, but I don't think so... !

The HD cable that I sourced as a replacement had the threaded caps on both ends. I re-used the cable ends from the original cable to get things sorted. Take a look at the cable construction; rather simple really. The cable ends screw on the cable.

That cable is the one you want! Never trust the memory of an old man with multiple projects! Here's a picture of my setup; the drive unit was modified to fit a 20mm axle. I don't have any other examples for comparison here.

Your drive unit is missing the brass part that receives the cable.

Yep, looks like I'm missing that brass piece.
It was probably broken off by the original owner, 'cause all the speedo parts were in a separate box when I got the bike.
Thanks, Darrel. Just what I needed. Now the hunt begins...

I see what looks to be punch marks in your drive housing. That part is zinc so it won't solder well and certainly won't braze. The brass part of my drive unit was loose in the housing and I used JB Weld to address this issue. My suspicions are the cable gets caught on something and then the brass gets tugged on and gets pulled out (it's simply a straight knurl pressed into the zinc). Afterwards the brass would have a loose fit. Not sure that it's a poor design as it may be more a nod to the cable being not well protected.
Something to look at when you find a replacement drive unit; tug on the brass. Shouldn't notice any movement by hand.

Thanks, I was also thinking about how that brass piece fits in there... there are no threads inside the wheel unit. It must be press fit. I'll see what I can find for a replacement.
My other 86 Auto has the same problem with the wheel unit... the brass piece is missing... so I can't use it.

Good question, suprize. Googled it and Veglia speedo parts were used on all types of Moto bikes, Moto Guzzi's, Ducatis, etc. I found a complete axle unit for $112. Too spendy, some on eBay though.
Veglia speedo products may have been put out of business by new tech that uses magnets and digital displays.
