Valve Adjustment Problems

    Hi Guys,
My 2008 610 is approaching 4000km so I decided to check the valves as part of the routine maintenance. They were a touch loose so I found TDC as best I could (rotating rear wheel, in gear, with piece of rod through sparkplug hole) and set them to factory .002 with a cold engine. I also turned the engine over and re-checked the clearances once finished. The .002 feeler gauge will fit snuggly with a little resistance and the clearance will not accept a .003 gauge.

My problem is, while the motor is now running a little quieter and what feels smoother, it has a rather low idle and will occasionally stall at traffic lights while the motor is warming up. Before the adjustment, the choke would only have to be used for 30 seconds or so and then could be pushed back in with no dramas. Now I'm manipulating the choke slightly to keep it from stalling 10 minutes into my ride. I'm also not 100% sure but it feels like it has dropped a little power in the higher rpm's.

Is it simply a matter of adjusting the idle higher than before? I never had to do this before. Or have I done something wrong?
Would anyone care to explain why I now have a lower idle with tighter clearances?

    Cheers,
    Peter

    I guess a 610 is different but a 630 is:
    .004-.006 inch intake
    .006-.008 inch exhaust

.002 sounds awful tight. Is it hard to start?

Pull in one day and check it hot, you may be dragging the cam once things get warmed up. 0.002" does seem tight, as Dynobob said. The 610's got jamb-nut valve adjustment, right?

The factory specs are written in MM, and on the 630, the exhaust max is 0.2mm, which is 0.008" You're not having unit conversion trouble are you? :p

No dramas with starting her at all.

I have heard the 630's run larger clearances but the later model 610's are definitely .002". No conversion troubles either haha and yes they run the locknut and screw adjustment.

Maybe check you did not knock a vacuum hose or something loose when adjusting them. I would not think a valve adjustment would cause the issue you describe.

Guys, he clearly states it's the 610, the 610 is NOT the 630 and on the 610 it is .002
The valves on the 630 are different and not the same as the 610 and y'all are just confusing anyone new, who maybe wouldn't know any better....:naughty:

How low is your idle now and what was it before?

I would just raise the idle slightly (cut a few fingers off first makes it easier! :p) and see what it is like. If the valves are spot on the bike is healthy. Also start the bike and warm her up a bit before riding. What is the plug like? I know my 610 seems to like the Iridium I fitted.

This is what I initially thought had happened but after pulling it all back down, everything was right where it should be. :(

It used to idle dead steady at 1600rpm once warmed up and the choke wasn't needed after a minute or so ride time. Now, while the idle is only slightly lower (1500rpm), it is certainly alot more erratic. Stationary at one traffic light she will sit happily at 1500rpm, the next, it will struggle to hold 1200rpm and occasionally stall unless I play with the choke.

I'll raise the idle a little tomorrow to see how that goes but somehow I don't think it will cure the erratic nature.. I know exactly what you mean about the placement of the idle screw. :banghead:

I think the manual says the Idle should be around 1800.

Wind it up and I'm sure it will be fine.

Ok, I adjusted the idle speed to 1800rpm today and unfortunately it still wants to play silly buggers. Idling steady at one traffic light, then dropping to 1300rpm the next and I'm sitting there blipping the throttle like a 2 stroke to keep it from stalling.

I guess I'll pull it back down on the weekend, re-check the clearances and have another look for any potential issues.

Does anyone think that perhaps a dodgy sensor (which one?) or a dying battery could cause these problems?

Thanks for all the help so far guys.

Have you done the PU mod? If not check the lamda sensor on the exhaust (sounds like the FI is 'hunting'). Also other connections including coil, and HT at spark plug ... and plug itself/

    We have a winner

Went over the ignition system as suggested, couldn't find any problems but come to the spark plug and the little metal cap screwed on top had worked itself slightly loose. A 1/4 turn to the right and she's now back to idling happy at 1600rpm.
It's amazing how sometimes the simplest of things can cause so much grief.

Thanks Big Dom and to everyone for the help.:applause:
