  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Valve adjustment?

I have a 2011 TE 250 and have about 18 hours on it. I can not find the service intervals in the on-line PDF manual. I ride with a guy that has a newer KTM 350 and he indicated that valves need to be inspected at 16 hours or so. Does out motor need a valve check at this time? Bike runs great and so far no issues although I did notice some oil leaking around the lower left side of the engine.I have changed the oil regularly ( every other ride) and other than that just ridden it like I stole it. Love the bike..

It never hurts to check the valves. This is just using a feeler gauge to see what the clearence is. If you have not ever checked the clearence, now is the time. I usually check them more frequently on a new bike (every 10-15 hours) to see if they are coming out of adj, not as often in the middle (over 40 hours) and more often as the hours pile on (over 100 hours).

Oil leaks are not related to valve adjustments.

What are tell-tale signs a bike needs valve adjustments (without opening her up)? Is it just relative power decrease thoughout rev range? Hard starting?

You will definitely notice it getting harder to start when the valves are out of adjustment.

Full power race mode.
Check first 3 hours then every 16 hours for MX and 32 hours for enduro From the service manual

But know mandate on hours or mileage when the head has to be pulled to check?

On a new motor that's breaking in, you're most likely to find them wander a bit until it's got some hours on it and things settle in.
Depending on how hard you ride the bike, an occasional clearance check will give you an idea how well they're staying in adjustment.

Not uncommon to check and find no adjustment required - gives you the peace of mind getting a feel for what the engine is doing and how often you need to get in there.

You don't pull the head - just the valve cover.
