Hydrolocked my 177 this weekend during the New England Charity classic ride. Not a good weekend for me.

Day 1, 10 miles in on the first hero section, nearly get out of it and bounce of a hidden log in a deep mud hole. Broke the petcock clean in half. Ended up JB-welding it, but was still leaking fuel quickly, so I got out of woods and got picked up. Went to local KTM dealer, got a petcock from a 2001 250SX and was back in it for day 2.

Day 2, all is well until approx. 40 mile marker. 100yard 2ft deep water crossing. 50 yards in and Going at a steady pace when all of a sudden, POP. Pushed it through the rest and off comes the tank. Cylinder head cracked right in half. Quicksteel isn't gonna fix that. Push it back through the water crossing and up a hill. Wait for a tow.

Cylinder and piston look perfect. Gonna check the bottom end tonight and see if there's more damage. Have a spare 125 head, just need to machine to fit the 165/177 cylinder.

I will be amazed if the piston is fine with that amount of fracturing in the head.
Congrats you don't do things by half!

like others have alluded to, need to remove crank and check runout as well as making sure rod isnt bent..im surprised the head gave like that. i would guess the rod would bend or piston would suffer damage..
perhaps the water was cold enough on the hot head to do that?

Yup pull the jug and whip piston out give it a thorough looking over perhaps put some ink or dye on it too see if that highlights fractures.

But tbh if your sticking a head on it i would stick a new piston in just because i would be pissed if three hours in that grenaded causing damage to jug n head too.

I have a fresh 125 bottom end that will be going in (with the 165 top end) while I pull the bottom end apart.

I'm guessing bent rod, but who knows. Spoke with Walt and he mentioned the fact the head was machined might help against hydrolocking. I'll see when the bottom end gets torn apart.

Thanks for the support, was an epic 50 miles of riding. Anyone in the Northeast area who hasn't done this ride should definitely consider it!

More info? Any links? Is it a private park? Public? Places to stay and ride?

Always looking for a good riding trip.

It's a 2 day trail ride consisting of 100 miles each day for street plated bikes (enduro). They run a Northern Loop & a Southern Loop with lunch provided each day. Start/Finish is at New Hampshire Motor Speedway with free camping.

This was my first year doing it, but I'll be back again next year for sure! They had 620 registered riders this year.

You can get plates for these Italian WR's????

Had no clue that was an option for US versions of these bikes. What all was involved?

In rural NC I just had to have some basic doc's and apply for a title. Now that I have the title just have to get inspected and pay tax, registration, etc. With the 300 I have a "Certificate of Origin" from the local BMW dealer and a bill of sale I downloaded and filled out myself  now the bike is titled in NC and can be street reg'd
