I was riding the other day and kept bottoming out the suspension on my WR250. I was thinking I could go a hell of a lot faster if my suspension wasn't bottoming out and causing me to bounce all over the trail. Then I goth to thinking... I have springs and a re-valve from LTR for a 200-210 lb rider and here I am at 236 lbs.. Plus at 6'6" I'm putting more leverage on my bike then a much heavier shorter rider. I decided then and there (90 days ago) I was going to lose weight. Sunday I weighed in at 205 lbs and it was a nice enough day to go ride a bit, especially for December. I rode faster, more relaxed and more in balance then I had in a long time. This also made me fatigue a lot less and it was much easier to stay standing longer. All this got me to thinking about how much money we spend to shave 10 lbs off our bikes and mods for more mid range or top end when the best mod I've done in a long time was lose 30 lbs of rider.

So now at 6'6" and 205 lbs, I can still use the name lankydoug but in truth my son, who is 19 years old and 6'9" and weighs the same as me, holds the lanky title in my household not to mention he smokes me riding his 2011 YZ450. I attribute that to his youth and although I can lose a few pounds I cant lose the years.

I hover between 205 and 210. I keep telling myself I need to get back down to my high school weight of 165. That way I'd be at the weight most bikes come sprung for and wouldn't have to spend money on suspensions anymore. Problem is I like beeeeer too much.

I have friend who comes over and he is all into losing weight and keeping it off and a calorie counter for sure .... Beer gives him fits also .... It only has the good effects for me and I use it for pain relief after most rides.

LD, sounds good and you make losing all that weight sound easy but probably was not... Add your log to the successful-bike-riding-story stack ...

Losing weight has never been a problem for me. I usually eat mass quantities of what ever I want and the only side effect is if I eat crap food I feel like crap. Three months ago I started to delay eating when I was hungry and would drink a cup of coffee or tea instead. I got used to being a little hungry most of the time. I would eat 1/2 of a sandwich and put the other 1/2 away and stretch out the time before I ate it. By the end of the day I would have eaten a lot less then I used to. 20 lbs came off in the first month.

You guys seem to have it easy when it comes to losing weight. Women seem to have a tougher time. I weighed about 110 pounds for most of my adult life until I reached my mid fifties and the dreaded "change of life" happened. Within a year, I gained thirty pounds. I was not ever a big eater in my life time, but was able to eat whatever I wanted. People tell me that I am not fat, and they used to say that I was too skinny, but I felt great and rode my dirt bikes well.

Now, I have cut back on sugar, fat and processed foods, but can only hold the line, not reduce my weight. I guess I would have to exercise a whole lot more to make any headway, but I am pretty sore with arthritis and such, so I am not so motivated. I bet if I wasn't carrying that 30 extra pounds around, I would be able to stand up and move around a lot more when I trail ride, but at this weight, my knees get tired and painful really quickly from getting my fat arse off the saddle. It would also be nice to fit into some of the clothes that I could wear 4 or 5 years ago.

My wife can follow a similar regiment as me and lose 10 lbs while I lose 30. I think it's got to do with the fact that muscle mass burns fat and men have more muscle mass. On top of that She has a Cherokee Indian metabolism that hangs on to every calorie.

Part of my gain had to do with a shoulder surgery that had me doing nothing for about 8 weeks.

Pain and working out is a catch 22 for sure.

    Nice job!

Buddy of mine lost 80 pounds in about a year, looks like a totally different person and had to buy new gear and redo his fatboy suspension. Funny.

I am about ready to start my program. I typically weigh 165 but have bloated to 171. I weigh myself everyday. I should weigh 155-160. I plan on having a good year next year and weight is a factor....Major to me.. I think most of us eat more then we need to. I'll try the tea or coffee.. Working out of town and with two young guys I have to feed at night sucks. Cold long days nothing but supper to look forword to . Need to crack the whip.....

Topic near and dear to me lately.
Earlier this year, lost 30 lbs in 5 months and have kept off.

Now down to 195 lbs at 6' 3".
Riding is much easier now and my gear fits better! Besides you look and feel much better too.

Best to keep the weight off when you get older if you want to keep riding and having fun.

Cycling. You can drop weight in a hurry if you are willing to ride a road bike for a few hours a week. The down side is that you have to find somewhere to ride where you won't be run over by a car.

That's part of my problem. I have been riding mountain bikes and road bikes at a serious level for the last 25 years. At one point there, I was riding well over 250 miles a week on the road bike. However my son is racing mountain bikes on his high-school team and he inherited both of my bicycles about a year ago. I'm now just trying save up for a new mountain bike, but I keep spending money on motorcycle stuff.

Hey this is ol boobs as he calls me(lol). I have read your posts about weightloss and I wanted to let you know about the paleo that Troy mentioned. You don't eat breads or sugars and you switch to other flours such as tapioca, rice, almond etc. and raw honey, coconut sugar, or date sugar. You have three cheat meals a week. I am one who loves my bread drug through alfredo sauce you know what i mean?? lol I don't miss bread at all as strange as that may sound. I make homemade banana bread, tortillas etc using these other items instead. Paleo is not the same as gluten free, but people with gluten intolerance or celiac disease can eat paleo. Gluten foods still have the high fructose corn syrups and additives but Paleo does not. The first thing I noticed is how I no longer felt bloated after eating a meal no matter what the meal was or how much I ate. You can go through fast food places and order a burger with no bun etc. Give it a try for a few weeks and if it isn't for you then you could always look into Plexus which I sell. lol Good luck everyone!!

The original owner's manual that came with my '74 WR250 has half a dozen pages in the back laying out a detailed fitness plan, a test to check progress and advises not to smoke. Nothing on diet, but still, this was from 40 years ago. I guess the idea of keeping fit to ride better is not new. Maybe I'll try the Husky plan and see how it goes. I'm fairly fit to start with, but there's always room for improvement.

I was getting tore up more on mountain bikes then dirt bikes. Not much body armor and clip in pedals were a hazardous combo.

A trials bike will give you a good workout especially if you try new more difficult skills that are done at extremely slow speeds.
