Although I would never part with my husky I was just wondering what other more modern big singles are out there?

Why do sidehack racers like that always use swingarm front ends?

Fe450, fe501 are the top bikes at the moment, easily modified to out produce the 690, with far less weight. 450 is a 5 speed and is highly versatile.

Exactly. I bet the weight of that monster coming down from a jump would fold even the beefiest front forks.

What's best on the road? Would 5 speed sit at 70-80 comfortably or would it be screaming it's head off

For road work the 690 would be best. They have or had anyway a Supermoto version. It's heavier but maintenance won't drive you crazy if you rack up street miles

I'm assuming you would commute. If mileage was minimal I'd be all over the 501

I use my 00 610e to commute it takes longer getting out of the shed than getting to work but it's worth it. I like the look of the new bmw g650gs. I'd prefer something a little more maintenance friendly as iv found out the hard way just how expensive parts an be.

Honda XR650L, Suzuki DR650 if you want reliable, mostly streetable, but good on a gravel road and non-single track. I once went from an XR650 to a BMW GS650 and was underwhelmed...I found the antique Honda to be better for everything but longer road trips. Eventually I bought another Honda.

It is a bit to do with weight .. sidecar cross front ends have to contend with more side load than a normal 2 wheeler so they use leading link to counter the stresses and make turning easier .. like power steering for a sidecar .

when i got my 610, i had the choice of buying a 89 xr650l i chose the husky and my brother in law bought the honda, he never could get the hang of starting it so he eventually sold it for silly money, wish i had just took the two. lol whats the latest year xr 650 can you get? or did they just continue them on under a different name like the xl/ transalp.
