What have you got in your toolkit? My bike came with no toolkit. I'm starting to build one now. What have you got in your toolkit for your bike? And, does anyone know where to buy the suspension wrench and long spark plug tool? Jim
you could start with the original tool kit and add to it. It's fairly inexpensive and seems to be stocked by most online shops. http://www.ktm-parts.com/AOMC/OEMFI...otorcycle_Equipment/02|~11|~0015/02|~11|~0003 http://shop.italhusky.com/en/products/2013/tr-650-terra-strada-1/equipment-19 Is it really worth it? Only the suspension wrench seems to be quite specific to the bike. Still a royal pita to use but none of my other wrenches work at all so i am happy to have the stock one. Not sure if others have good alternatives but remember it was discussed here a while ago. The spark plug socket is a standard 14mm if you use the original NGK plugs. The stock one is ok for on the road repairs (never needed it) but i vastly prefer a ratchet and proper socket. Torx keys are bog standard. Don't remember if i ever needed the phillips/flat blade screw driver. Beside that you certainly want to add a wrench (24mm i think) for the wheel axle nuts and an 8 and 10mm ring wrench. I also have 5 and 6mm allen keys in the kit, not sure why. Those tools i was able to fit in the location of the original tool kit. Tyre spoons are in the tank bag.
You'll also need 12mm wrench for the chain adjustment bolts, 14mm and 17mm sockets or ring wrenches for the suspension linkage (you'll need 2 of the latter) and T50 for the engine bolts. Philips head screwdriver for the front brake reservoir and the air box lid. And I'm pretty sure I used a 12mm socket somewhere as well. Wheel axle nuts are indeed 24mm. Some form of punch to remove the brake pad pins is useful as well.
The OEM toolkit is pretty basic and IMHO a complete waste of time on my day to day rides. If I go on a longer planned trip, then I may take some tools, but as yet I have not had to use them. C Spanner for Adjusting rear suspension is ok but a complete PITA to use, so it stays at home. My suspension set up is pretty good for Solo and performs well 2 up with luggage, so I never bother to change it. The +/- Screwdriver is good for....not much, so it stays at home. Spark Plug Spanner is now redundant as I have had Brisk Plugs in the bike for the past 8k km. Has anyone ever needed the OEM plug spanner whilst away from home, say on a day/weekend trip, probably not. Torx Tool, all you need is a T25 to open up the covers, but a good set is handy to have on a long run. My tyres contain Puncture Sealant Slime, I have only ever had to pull a large nail out of the rear once since I had the bike about 9k km ago. The slime leaked a bit then is totally sealed the leak so its as good as original. The hole was never big enough or in a position to lead to any form of blow out or instant failure so I never bothered with it. In fact the area under my seat is occupied by a smaller Yuasa YTX-9-BS Battery, a Fuzeblock powering the Accessories and at the moment a Wiseco FI Controller. There is not much room for the toolkit that I have never needed to use on a short trip. On a longer (2 days+) planned trip I will take a full set of good quality Torx, the +/- Screwdriver, an Oxford Motorcycle Handy Toolkit, 10mm, 12mm, 13mm combo spanners and a Tyre Plugger Kit with CO2 cylinders, a Pressure Gauge and various sizes of Zip Ties. These items all go in the Top Box with a small First Aid Kit where they are handy to get at anytime. With bike repair shops of varying standards all over the Philippines, you can usually find someone just down the road with the tools to help you perform most urgent repairs. (They never have the Torx though) If it is more serious, then a pick up truck would be my next choice. Obviously the tools you carry depend on when and where you ride, and if solo or not. I can appreciate guys who go out on longer weekend trails etc needing certain tools, but I cannot see the point of overkill either. If I was going it alone into remote areas, then a Chain Link, a 24mm Socket for wheel removal and an Enduro Trail Stand would be my additional choices.
I changed plugs on the road, but that was on a rather uncommonly long trip. I do carry it always, mainly in case I bin it during a water crossing and need to clear water from the engine.
Jim for the wet,, don't forget the condoms. The flask contains octane booster for hoomans, optional for a larf start here and go backwards http://www.cafehusky.com/threads/kellys-ongoing-goofy-thread.31094/page-217
don't forget we have FI'd ECU bikes. I always carry a cheap $6 miniature multimeter from Jaycar for basic fault finding, sensors, switches, charging etc.
Thanks all for the input So here's where I'm at: Starting from the top left: * Tube repair kit with patches, CO2 etc * Small vise grips * Shifting spanner * Feeler gauges * T-handle and various sockets including 14mm spark plug socket * Full set of Torx for longer trips * Torx toll for shorter trips * Rear suspension spanner * Multi-bit screw driver and a bunch of bits * Various size spanners * Rim protectors * Bead buddy * Tyre levers * Head torch * Gorilla tape * Tyre pressure gauge * Bunch of zip ties * Chain breaking tool * Home made tool roll to put it all in I think I still need: * JB weld * Extension bar for Socket wrench * Spare fuses * Spare globes * Electrical wire * Multi -tool * Wheel nut spanner/socket * Chain links and pressing tool And * A truck to carry it all in Anything I'm missing?
