250-500cc When does a WR300 need a rebuild/freshen up?

I have a 2013 WR300 with approximately 800kms on the dash. I was wondering when it would be a wise idea to throw a new set of rings in or a piston etc?

I was thinking of at LEAST doing rings at 1000kms, but may as well throw a new piston in there while im going. And piston-gudgeon bearing.

How many k's are people doing on their 300 before cracking the engine?

    Thanks in advance.

You should be able to go three times that. My buddy gets about 1500-1800 miles before it starts feeling soft power wise. Do a compression check and us that as your guide.

Thanks, what are the compression specs/limits? I dont have a service manual. Cheers :)

need to check compression when fresh & then again when getting tired(with same gauge!) & use that as a comparison guide. i do about 100+ hours/4000km per top end. usual story-how you ride it(rev or lug)/oil used/air filter maintenance/drownings etc. tough donk though! i wouldnt be worrying for a long time if i were you though:thumbsup: werent you selling that thing anyway neesmo due to a crook knee or the likes? bottom end hopefully around 300 hours. will see how the rod feels soon(200 hours-top end due!) & go from there

Yeah back into it again.... cant stay off em - however im looking at trading my 300 for a Terra 650 and doing more cruising rather than outright enduro. Knee is still knackered especially after trying to get a mates XR400 going...

Riding style, more lug than rev - oil motul M800 factory at around 47/48:1, air filter done after any dirt ride (most kms have been road).

I am about at 3500 mark on my 09 300. I was feeling guilty and was about to buy a piston kit. Have perfect compression, bike starts up and runs awesome though.
Then I saw a thread on advrider about some guy with a mid 90's kdx 220 that just 60,000 km. he replaced his topend at 30,000. Never touched the bottom end.

My 1988 husky cr250 had approximately 9000 miles on it when I sold it.

I personally believe and have experienced modern two strokes are amazing and the bikes will let you know way ahead of time(hard starting, low compression etc) before you need to touch them.

Wow thats insane mileage! Yeah I like tinkering, and if a cheap set of rings helps keep the piston and bore in good nick than it might be a worthwhile venture. But if people are going 1500 - 1800 miles than thats good enough for me!

16 hours is what the manual says, but if your dealer is going to give you a hard time because you didn't do the top end after 1 weekend of riding, you need a better dealer.

Not to mention, the warranty is what, 30 days?

12 months in OZ not that that counts for much, they try to worm their way out of everything here! 16 hours what a joke.

Check my WR Piston Life thread on Thumpertalk. I went around 16000km on my piston and rings. The machine was running great when I did the top end. Runs even better now. Only bottom ring was slightly out of spec. My brother ran his WR until the piston cracked and we had to do the top end. Based on ring wear I think he had twice the use on that engine. We use Amsoil Dominator/Interceptor and have very low wear and buildup. We ride mainly dualsport with no long sustained high rpm's but do go WOT when necessary. Unless you have extra $$ I recommend riding more and rebuilding less. These motors are very durable.
