I know there's all kinds of info out there that if you take a good hit on your helmet it's time for a new one, but what about age? If you haven't really had any big spills is there still some kind of recommendation for replacing your helmet due to age compromising it's effectiveness?
I've read somewhere that you should replace a helmet every two years. I'm not likely to replace mine until it takes a hit, or shows signs of some sort of wear or stress.
I had an old Answer dirt helmet laying around that was about 10 years old with maybe 15 riding days of use. It was in a bag and stored indoors in a dark closet. When I bought the Husky a few years back, I just grabbed it and headed to the dealer to ride my new toy home. Turns out the liner had degarded over the years and I kept getting crap in my eyes from the goggles and liner that had both literally bitten the dust. I had ring around the forehead when I got it home from the 40 mile ride. However, my 3/4 HJC I use with my Harley took almost 9 years to show it's age. I didn't really notice it until I tried the new Shoei that was the same size how much the liner had started to shrink over time. Yep, took the Shoei home.
Has anyone actually tried to smash through their old helmet, No? I have! a fiberglass one took three heavy hits with a 4lb axe to go through the lid! Polycarbonate took two to brake to inner shell. The shells are hard as a drop from a table should cause no adverse effects. Glue degrading polystyrene breakdowns anorher story but i wouldnt replace lid unless its proper beat up.! Or older than 3-4years. Its your call but my head is pricless people will argue i know but i personally wont jeopardise my feeling of safety for no cost.
I'd replace every couple years. It really is just insurance for you and what you feel comfortable doing. The way the helmet is stored can make a difference. Have you ever left it in the garage on a 20 degree day and then go riding? Helmet feels stiff. I'd say if stored properly and no major impacts 5 years would be my max. Seeing as how the median price for helmets is roughly 250, 125-150 per year to protect your head is nothing. Spend way more on oil and filters
I try and replace mine every two years. It's just an insurance policy I hope not to have cash in on. I ride the woods and I certainly have my share of falls and tree branches that bash my helmet pretty good. I feel a bit safer knowing I have head protection that has not been compromised with the battering my stuff takes.
I always replace my helmet at least every two years. Padding breaks down. Shell becomes brittle. Just normal banging takes a toll on it. I just feel better knowing the helmet if needed, is as fresh as it was designed. I buy the best that I can afford. I am not bashing anyone, this is just my habits.
