I am really interested in a Husky SM, but I can't figure out which would be best for me: SM450R, SM510R, or SM610R. I want something for a 1000+ mile trip that will be reliable, require the least amount of maintenance, have a low seat height or can be easily lowered (I'm 5'4"), have a smooth ride with little vibration, and enough power to cruise at 70mph for extended periods. I sat on a 610 once, and I was able to reach the ground (barely). I've read good reviews on them, and they sound reliable. I don't know anything about the 510 or the 450. I currently ride a Honda CRF230L, but I have experience on bikes as big as a 750. The 230 is great for what I use it for, but obviously it would not be ideal for a 1000+ mile trip where I need to ride at a decent pace and occasionally get on the freeway, hence the need for a second (larger) bike.
No question the SM610 would be the best bike for what you want. I have a SM450. Great bike, but not good for any distance. The engine (510 included) does not like extended periods of constant throttle position like you would have for highway riding. The 610 handles this much better.
I dunno...I could be biased since I have an SM610, but it sounds like you need a 610 to me. I'm 5'1" and lowered my 610 slightly more than 1" and it fits me fine. I put dirt-capable tires on it and ride it everywhere. It's the perfect adventure/long distance dualsporter for me. Some wind protection would be nice (some of the guys here have done some great mods in this regard) but my everyday commuter doesn't have any (naked SV) so I'm pretty much used to it and it doesn't bother me much. I've had a ton of streetbikes, mostly 600cc and up sportbikes, but this SM610 is the best streetbike I've ever had, no question about it. It'll go anywhere a CRF230L will go if you have decent dirt skills, too. Super versatile and the motor is smooth as silk. Smoothest big bore single I've ever ridden. Just my two cents worth WoodsChick
Thanks for the info. I kind of got that idea from the research I've done so far, so what you're saying backs that up...that the 610 would be the one best suited for the road.
Hey Woodschick, I think I saw some of your ride reports on either TT or ADV--can't remember which one, but your riding skills are impressive! Your postings had me thinking that maybe if I got the Husky it could eventually be a do it all bike for me. I don't ride much singletrack anyway--seem to be more into riding to see the sights the older I get.
Pretty sure I'm gettin' one when they get here. Have the cash, just need to massage the wife a little.:smirk: and get her a helmet
If anyone is looking for a NEW 08 Husky SM610 both Halls in IL and Heinens motorsports in MN have them for $5999 before 4/1/09. I know Heinens ships around the nation also. They can get either color at Heinens. I may add one to the keep the TE510 company soon. Will see.. can't decide which color
Both the gun metal grey and red ones are cool looking, the red looks a bit racier but the grey looks more sinister, it's just what ever suits you're personality but the 610 is definetly the bike for you're application.
I thought the red/white may be more noticable on the street but then the black/white guys will notice you easier too...
When I got my TE-250 I asked the dealer about buddy pegs for the wife he said they came in a bag on delivery. That was the deal maker for me. Since then the pegs are back in the bag in the garage and she has not gone for any rides on the bike. -Art
