Everytime I come in from the garage after starting, running and messing with the bikes I take a deep wiff and think... "Ahhhhh.... I smell GOOD!" The wife thinks differently. Could this be a Man versus Woman thing? I've found that I can easily distinquish between 2 stroke and 4 stroke "perfume". Perhaps I could bottle these scents and sell them????
Don't worry Krieg, you're not alone here. I also think exhaust is some sort of great smell. Especially if the ol Husky is drinking high octane fuel. Smells so sweet and delicious.
I don't think that it's a "guy thing". I like the smell of two stroke exhaust, if it's an oil that burns nice like Motorex. In the old days, it was the smell of castor oil burning that was magic. Can't say that I like the smell of four stroke exhaust. Maybe with racing gas, it smells good, but not pump gas.
Ya you can't beat racing fuel. Like VP 12/14. Yum. Or better yet for me. I love Racing fuel two stroke Oil and burning rubber. The Best by far.. Awww I can smell it just by closing my eyes. Drag bike. 2 stroke twin world record.
What motivates me to do yard work? Blendzall in the lawn mower, gas edger and chainsaw. Who says "honey do's" can't be fun.
olfactory pleasure... Used to use Klotz in our YZ-125's. I loved the aroma so much that I would often save my buddy the embarrassment of getting passed so I could enjoy the smell. Problem was, you couldn't mix it lean enough to keep from gumming everything up. Switched to Bel-Ray MC1+ at 3.5 ounces per gallon and never fouled a plug again. 2-smoke still smelled sweat, but no cherry smell like the Klotz. Boy, those were the good 'ol dayz when we weighed 145 and a 125 could zip us around like we were mane on the neck of a wild mustang. Too bad we need those torque-monster 4-strokes to power our 200-lb carcasses around these days. But, hey, I still love the way my TE smells when it's idling. It still smells like new horsepower to me, but the Klotz will always have a special place in my olfactory gland...
I remember the day's stuck in a bottleneck on a single track about 100 yards before a big nasty hill. I could tell who was running what just by taking a whiff! Of course when my eyes are stinging & I'm coughing, I don't really care about it right then!
you 2 stroke guys can have your cake and eat it too,,,our senior crew member always throws just a bit of Maxima 927 into his regular blend, just for the aroma. he is funny that way, but it sure smells good following the fast old guy through the single track!!
AHHH the memory of bean oil being run by a lot of guys is very sensory uplifting. Man the mx tracks smelled so good.
"In the old days, it was the smell of castor oil burning that was magic" Every once in awhile I'll get a whiff and I go back in time. Not just to the off road and MX tracks but the TT races and hillclimbs. I never know where I'll be. But yes, race gas in a modern four stroke is a very pleasant aroma too.
I never had a 2-stroke vehicle, but have had chainsaws and weed whackers that have that unmistakable odor. I've found it quite handy to follow a 2-stroker in unfamiliar territory because sometimes I can tell by the smell if I'm on the right crook of a Y or not if I've lost sight of them, lol. I really enjoy the smell of 100LL exhaust. Reminds me of smooth air and clear skies and an old radial exhaust note from the past.
(I'm using the waaaay back machine here) I remember Klotz being the premix oil of choice...now that brings back memories and I absolutely LOVE that smell...smells like FUN is about to happen or just did!
It should be a perfume in my books. I wonder if the wife would wear it. I'd stick to her like glue....hmmmm.
My dad carried me to a lot of dirt track & road racing back in the mid to late 70's. I always remembered how good race fuel & castor oil smelled. I knew we were at the race track when that sweet smell was in the air. Every race I went to was all 2 stroke machines. Alas, those days are gone, so about the only time I get an invigorating whiff is a Barbers Vintage Race Days in October. On a side note, Mr. Barber has been entertaining thoughts about having a 1/2 mile dirt track facility for vintage dirt racing. Sweet!!!
