I've injured my knee a month ago & have been looking forward to getting out in the woods to clip & clean some of our trail systems up after a wet & stormy spring everything has grown up or blown over. The speak easy has been hit hard with downed trees but all my buddies are focused on the 24 hour race at Perry Mountain next weekend (one of my friends actually got a factory Gas-Gas sponsor on a Six Days 250 - Cahaba Valley Motorsports/Dirt Bike Supply. So, I went out last week by myself (well the dog came along) & went to some land close to the house & revisited some trail that hasn't been ridden in 6-8 years. I work 4 hours on Saturday & 3.5 on Sunday clipping a lot of established trail & I also cleared & cut some new trail around the downed trees. I had a blast, I know it may sound weird but I like to hike in the woods & cut trail, it's satisfying. So I recruited another guy that doesn't have the 24 hour stare, and we are going out next weekend & do some more. It's gonna be really good, close to the house for easy usage (my 7 year old has made All-Stars in baseball...What have we gotten ourselves into) & thinking back it should be around 20 miles +/- a few. Plus the geodetic map shows a strip mine around there (hill climb challenge ) I'm gonna find that area. What say you??
Yep, I like to give it a go sometimes. Usually find some awesome shortcuts or sometimes even find new trails
Count me in! Not weird at all! I really enjoy doing trail work.... alone, with a partner or in a crew. I run a trail section for my club's enduro and hare scramble. Quality time in the woods is the best medicine for me. I did an hour or so today on the way home today, at last year's Husky Gathering site. I opened back up some single track, that hasn't been ridden in a couple of years. I can't wait to ride it this weekend.
With all our burn areas, if you don't clear trail 40-60 hours a year you don't ride. The FS only clears high profile non-motorized trails and then closes any that aren't maintained by the riders as soon as they go unused for any period.
If I lived in your area, I'd be in. I like to do trail maintenance, so much so that I signed up with our local Forest Service agency as a volunteer to help maintain local riding trails at an OHV area called Corral Canyon. Our group goes out 4 or 5 times a year to cut brush and fix problem spots. We also go out individually and work on trails too.
When i have time i love to cut trail. Made a bunch up at a friends place 2 years ago that turned out great. Fun stuff.
Yeah, that's me....I save all the hot lines for myself. Always making sure that there is no ribbon around the said "hot line"....It's my favorite pass
I agree...cutting new trail is as close as you can get to Lewis & Clark'n it! Three of us armed with a bush axe, a bow saw and a machette would spend a day or two cutting some nice technical trail on some property overlooking Lake Keowee...great fun, until you bump into a hornets nest! What's that old saying about not having to out run a bear...
Ticks are horrible this year...I had 3 on me Saturday & eight (8) on me Sunday.... They freak me out, especially since I know some one that had Lyme Disease. Scary stuff, luckily I got home so fast from the woods none had had much time to settle in. Edit: Is had had proper english??
Since moving up here from L.A. (Lower Alabama) I hardly ever get in to any ticks plus the weather in the Greenville area will really spoil you if your use to the deep south heat/humidity.
I've never done it myself. If it meant we could actually get some legal singletrack in this area, you bet your a** I'd be out there helping out.
Houston we have a problem .... My wife is ticked with me because she found a tick in the house, then I found a tick on her head last night. I guess when I threw my clothing into the clothes hamper, there must have been more ticks in my pants & shirt . I should have known better really & left my clothing outside for a day or two. I washed & treated my dog already, she's had her fair share of ticks since our hike Saturday. So, anybody have a remedy to fog the house with or how to de-tick my place. I have to do something quick, because the "Boss" won't let me cut any more trail 'til fall. Ohhh and does anyone recommend a good tick repellent for me if I get to go out this weekend?
I think some of the aerosol spray repellents claim to repel ticks. I am not sure which ones or if they work, but I know you can tape up the bottoms of your pants with duct tape and it will stop them from getting in your pants. other than that, like you said just leave your clothes outside and have the "boss" so a tick check! And just to be safe...you should give her a tick check too I hope you can make it out this weekend.
I look forward to cutting new trails almost everytime I go out.If my son comes out to ride ,we take turns trimming or cutting trail . We don't have much land around the area ,so we try and keep the trails close together/not overlapping. The new area is dense trees which greatly reduces any bike noise and keeps the neighbors from complaining. We've have seen bobcats and deer on many occasions and they don't seem to be mind us being there.....despite what enviromentalists may say. Guscycle
My local enviro-nazi FS rule makers protect any form of natural wildlife over human life while they spend most of their spare time playing my golf course....one of the most un-natural, contrived environments there is today.
When they finally publish their new travel plan I am predicting localized precipitation events that follow them around the golf course.
""have been looking forward to getting out in the woods to clip & clean some of our trail systems up after a wet & stormy spring everything has grown up or blown over. "" Great to see trail stewardship. That helps our fight to keep trails open. Thanks BMW -Rocknroll
I've been a recreational member at a hunting club before... Which meant that I had no hunting rights on the land( I don't hunt Deer so I didn't care) but I could cut trail & ride on 1500 acres. At first the hunters weren't too friendly, until they found our single track was like a deer highway system. Then we riders got some pats on the back for our hard work in their woods. Seem nature has a need for conserving energy as it makes its way through the woods & our trails met that need.
