• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Who likes to ride in the nasty winter weather?

Do you like to ride in the rain and snow?

Just wondering how many are winter riders and don't mind a good rain ride. Maybe a good place and time to share your winter / wet setups.

I don't mind riding when it's cold or freezing cold but hate snow and rain. I guess I'm getting old or something. Now when I was a kid if the bike would run I would ride no matter what the weather was doing.

I'll ride in the cold, rain and snow. Sometimes it takes a bit of motivation, but once I'm going.... I'm really glad I did. When the snow gets too deep, it's time for the sled though. Even then, I'll still get out on the lake for some flat tracking on the ice.

I had a blast riding snow/ice with some sheet metal screws in the tires last year. We just cut the tip of the screw to avoid going thru the tire carcass and loaded up whichever knobs we could with screws. Worked great on the front, even outside of snowy conditions. Bit into the frozen trail. The rears spun out eventually and traction was lost. Missouri is also great for riding after rain. Its mostly rock so the water runs off, the creeks are up, and the tractions about the same as dry. My favorite time to ride is just after the deluge.

Gotta ride whenever I can since the family schedule is usually pretty packed and riding dates can be hard to come by at times. I went out on this last minute ride by myself years ago, this was the weather on the way to the ride!

Its funny now reading the description I wrote on my Smugmug page about the ride, ran into a bunch of my riding buddies.

Reiter, Thanksgiving Weekend. Sunday 11/27/05. I went up riding by myself, did a good 15 mile ride or so, then bumped into Trav and his buddies. Did a 5 mile of so ride with them. Then ran into Lorne who told us that Colin and Tyler were up there too! Ha ha!

It was pretty slick in the early morning, but it soon stopped snowing and warmed up and it was AWESOME riding conditions.

I honestly prefer riding in the wet and like wet slick over dry slick any day.

I always think that we don't have dry slick here, but we do. We have a some clay and silt soil, south of me and when it dries out, it turns to pure talcum powder. It's really slick, when it's like that!

If it's wet, I prefer to ride when it's still raining, over when just muddy.

I have ridden quads in the snow and ice when I lived in upper Michigan , not enough experience to do it on a bike , would probably break my a$$!

Ive ridden flat track style on a frozeb lake with screws on the dirtbike so I guess thats a yes haha

To be honest, I don't like snow that has packed and refrozen. It's just too slithery. A little bit of fresh snow is very nice and a rarity down here. Maybe only get to ride in it 2 or 3 times a winter. Plenty of rain in the winter though. It's peaceful and everything smells good, and usually nobody else out on the trails, so it's like having my own private riding area.

Ed are you freaking rocking the BeeGees? Wow. I miss you you funny f-er.

K

Yep. I think this was the same day, was on a video tear or something.

And yeah, we'll have to plan a ride one of these days after I get my suspension and jetting sorted. See if we can get Lorne and some of the other guys rounded up and put in a few miles. A kinda north meets south type of thing maybe.

Puddle jumpers unite!

Riding in the rain is fun, getting dressed in the rain sucks! That is when an enclosed trailer is really nice.

Later,

After working outside all through the winters in the PNW since the early seventies the prevailing conditions have lost some of their appeal, but I still like to get out just not near as much when it is nasty. BTW, dry snow any time:thumbsup:

I don't venture too far from known shelter in the winter. If its a more remote riding area, I have dry everything and a small plastic poncho. I've had to throw the poncho on under my jersey and it did a nice job of keeping me warm. Wear the jersey over it to keep it from getting shredded by trees/brush. Cmon winter.

Really not much of an issue in Oz. Although I bet you did not know we have more snow by area than the Swiss Alps (I kid you not). Pretty well g'tee 9 out of 10 week ends free of rain in Sydney. Riding in the NSW/Victorian high Country in winter one often encounters snow, still its more of a novelty than anything else.
