My SM610 is 150kg (330lbs) wet. The mirrors and passenger pegs are removed and the gutted & shortened can fitted weighs 2.3kg (5lbs) Its got a Trail Tech X2 headlight with a Polisport mudguard and a DRC edge 2 tail light with bracket (plastic one) and the small aluminium frame has been removed. The things ive fitted that add weight are lever guards, axle sliders and a 5" rim. So ive stripped everything off that i could. So wheres the 610 hiding the weight? There are other bikes that manage to be lighter. Also, tell me how i wouldnt be as happy with a Yamaha 450 instead of my Husky?
Look at the bottom end of the of your engine.... it's massive! That's where most of the weight lives. My '03 TE610E is even a bit heavier, with twin exhaust cans.
Because it's a big dual sport? Engine alone in my 630 is about 95 lbs. If I recall correctly, the wheel set on the SM versions (tire, rim, tubes) are heavier than the dual sport version.
Yeah, you weighed it at 95lbs in your engine rebuild thread, thats almost 1/3rd of the bikes total weight. I was thinking the wheel set added a good chunk aswell. Youll have to forgive my ignorance, i dont have any interest in riding off road, so dont understand the world of dual sport and the reason theyre heavier.
How can you not have interest in riding off road? That's where the best riding is to be had. If I could ride off road I would seldom venture out onto the road. The reason I like SMs is because they are off road derived, there aren't that many road bikes that I like. I really don't like road motorcyclists, I prefer not to associate with that group.
I am that group, or atleast was. I like rough twisty two lane roads that are torture on sportsbikes, where the unbelievable handling of a sumo comes into its own, these roads are usually quieter aswell. So much braking power and unreal flickability, supermoto blows my mind, made my Fireblade look shit.Riding off road just doesnt interest me.
If I swapped the 610 motor into my Husaberg, it would add 35 lbs, but only bring the bike up to 295lbs. Could be nice!
Hmm, not sure why I said I "really don't like" road motorcyclists. I will probably try out a few road motorbikes at some point. I think I was annoyed by Spicy Weasel's comment about not liking off road, hence I went on the defensive and proclaimed to dislike road motorcyclists. I still maintain if you like this then you are partially on your way to liking off roading In terms of road riding I prefer those types of back roads too, the smooth tarmac holds little appeal to me, indeed on a sports bike I might find I enjoy it more but my heart will always be in off road and the poorly surfaced twisties.
Ive had my own bikes since i was about 6, and rode off road until i was about 13 and had a TS50 on the road for a year when i was 16. Ive also had access to quad bikes for a lot of years. I just think of trying to ride off road as a pain in the arse now, and the thought of it doesnt excite me. If im riding off road, it means im passing through a grass verge on my way into a hedge.
I am yet to ride a machine that has the power to make smooth flowing roads enjoyable, so I may find I like it to a certain extent. I quite like the looks and spec of the Triumph Daytona 955i: The Japanese big four don't do anything for me. Obviously they are very capable and good bikes but they are so popular I like something more unique. Having said that I would still probably prefer off road, I feel like I couldn't own a road bike in place of an off road/dual sport bike. Fair enough if you like to do both, I will probably try a road bike at some point. Lucky you, for being born into that background I had to make do with pedal bikes until now but even on pedals I preferred a nice bumpy off road course to smooth tarmac.
