Oops. I spelled WEIRD wrong and can't fix it. Oh well. Anyways.

I have an 07 WR250. I recently had to ride a ton of slab to make it back to camp before running out of fuel. This meant a lot of consistent higher RPMs . It wasn't ideal and took a toll on the motor. Well after a while the motor started to have a clicking/grinding sound following what the piston was doing in unison. So we stopped and cooled them down for a little bit and then continued. It started doing it again after a few minutes but I babied it back to camp.
The next day we rode a loop with no strange noises.
What could the this have been? Do I need to replace the top end?

    Suggestions please.

Sounds like it was running lean and almost seized. It was good to stop and let it cool down. I heard people putting the choke on to richen the mixture during long high speed road runs.

You could pull the exhaust pipe and look at the piston through the exhaust manifold. If it did seize, then you should see scoring on the piston.

The piston and rings look fine. No scoring. I ran fine the next day.
Is the exhaust side more prone to show wear?

Usually yes, it runs hotter because of the exhaust and it is easy to check.

Might be a good idea to pull the jug and check to make sure, check wrist pin clips. Clicking and grinding sounds are not something that I would ignore the next day...

It may have just been "ping" from low octane as it heated up and leaned out. But, pull the pipe off and look at the exhaust side of the piston.

I had to take the pipe off anyways since it's all jacked up now too. The piston and rings look great. No scoring or signs of any issues. If I were to pull the jug would it be to inspect if the clips are not in place? I'm thinking its the lean ping at this point. But should there be a reason to change the piston with the info I've given?
Also, my friends 300 was doing the same thing. That makes me think its a lean issue and we both could have seized.

With that I'd say richen the jetting a bit and go for it.

If it is colder out then the jetting needs to be richened.

    Was it a cold day?

    Frozen ground.

Sounds like we both got lucky. Next time that happens, I'll try the choke trick.

    Here's a bit of trivia... What's leaner, a mixture of 35:1 or 100:1?

    I'll bite...

I get confused, but recently read up on this...

35:1 because there is less gas to air, then the 100:1

    Did i even come close?

So, 205 psi. Piston looks awesome. It had to of been detonating. I'm starting to think it's fine.
