Hey guys! just picked up my first husky last night and need some info and advice on the bike. On start up, the bike smokes a lot and continues to puff more than I would consider normal for a two stroke. Do I need to split the cases to change the crank seals, or can I change them by removing the magneto and clutch side cover and gear etc.?

Also, what type of rear shock did these bikes have? and will shocks from previous/later models fit? The one on it now is a pogo stick and has chips along the shaft.. probably lost all its oil.

    Cheers!

My 02 250 had the main seal go. Cases had to be split. I did the bottom end at the same time just because it was split. My bike has a Showa rear. Is yours a six speed?

Nah it's a wide ratio 5 speed, seems really good for cruising. I should probably split the cases to change all the bearings anyway so I'll start taking it apart soon. It smokes heaps when it's cold and continues to smoke even when it's been warmed up, so I just figured it must be crank seals. Will I need any special tools to split it?

How many hours were on the motor when you noticed the seal was smoked? Im at 50 on my 2012.

No idea...the factory cases had never been split up till last summer. I prob put 300 plus hours on the bike since 09. The bike just started smoking worse and worse. My buddy said put some gear oil in the tranny and you can really smell it coming out. 50 hours doesnt seem like much. I didn't do the work but I've been told you need case splitters to do it. I've got a wide ratio 5 speed in mine now ... Great for cruising. The cr250 motor is rebuilt and sitting as a spare.

i have similar problem with my 96 wr 250, if it was crank seals would it still have heaps of compression and still run? it was running but wouldn't hit band, would bog down and blow heaps of smoke. was trying to nurse it home and it started blowing black smoke and burning oil in the exaust. i stopped straight away. bike just recently had new cylinder, piston and rings, i think 300cc kit, when i recently bought it. is it crank seals or power valve?

Only a case splitter, crank puller and flywheel puller...don't lose the woodruff key either!!

You can use other homemade techniques to split cases and pull the crank out but do yourself a favour and buy the appropriate tools, their interchangeable with any bike you'll have to split down the track except the flywheel puller as 4t and 2t's tend to be slightly different in thread diameter and pitch.

i was thinking that was the 1st problem of it not hitting band. would riding it with pv stuck, could that have caused the crank seal to go?

I doubt it is your crank seals. Also you can change them without splitting the case. The motors on these, especially the bottom end is VERY robust. Probably the type of oil you are using and the jetting is fat. I'd not be in a hurry to dive into the bottom end as I doubt there is an issue there. Could be but not the first place I would look. Does it idle erratically? Is there oil in the stator side (under the cover)?

Crank seals come out without splitting the case. Page 39 here...

Yup if the bikes not loosing gear oil or bogging down and dying then it could be oil spooged exhaust powervalve.
When seals go bad your bike may run for a few mins then wham the throttle open it dies.
