I couldn't stay away from 2 strokes for long - a nice 300 came up and it was a good deal and easy so its now in my garage . After 5 years with the 125 to 165 I thought I at least try it out and have one for a while

I will be taking it and the te 250 r for a 2 day trail ride this weekend so i will report back my thoughts after that .
So far its like - yeh baby !

Unfortunately I won't pass enduroX scrutineering by mid afternoon Saturday (ie. breathalyzer) :)

I'm sure the 300 will love the sandy section in Sundays loop...
Should be fun, see you there.

I don't wanna taint your results but I've got 3 similar bikes and ran quite a few timed tests over several different type trails ... It was obvious to me which bike was the easiest to go the fastest on in about 99% of my testing ...

Good luck with your riding and testing!

Just curious why/if you sold you're 165,I'm looling at one of the last 13 model WR125's in QLD but worriedI might not want to ride my 300 or will be riding the 125 and be missing the 300,so interested to here what you think of your 300.Is your's a 10 model?

just get one of each Ran(i did!) & 165 the 125. the 125 heaps of fun & really light/nimble compared to the 300 but the pure grunt factor of the 300 is never forgotten or far from your mind when you wish you had a bit more torque/power. youll never get a quality 125 for $6.5K again so snap that bad boy up! what are they flogging it for out of curiousity?

Well 3.5 hr drive out to the bush yesterday and I did a 50 k loop on the TE250R and then the same loop on the WR300 - '10.
Today I took out the bike I enjoyed the most for a 60 k loop with Boogie - which was ...........the TE .

The TE is so easy to go a reasonable pace on . Its a bit down in power on straight bits bit so manageable through tight stuff .
A bit like a 125/165 - but Id say I like the 165 better on real tight stuff and nasty hills. Id say I am about the same pace of the TE - possible faster than on 125 platform.
I m not fast by any means but generally competent in technical stuff and like to open a bike up .

The 300 - well it still needs to be set up better and it will take a while to get used to riding it . I noticed the vibration mostly at first and the slightly bigger feel .
I must say the forks had been set up by a tuner- possible for racing and firmer than stock so I think Its not really a fair comparison .
The front forks were harsh and feeling all the bumps . At time I also felt oversteering feeling - like it had a flat tyre .

It actually reminded of how my ktm 250 felt - minus over heating haha

The biggest issue though was starting bike ..... cold took quite a few quicks. it wasn't easy at all. It wouldnt start at one point on the ride so I pulled out the plug and the jetting still appeared to be rich .
I had already gone one step leaner on pilot and main so I think I will have to go leaner again . I had a 420m and 40 pilot in it - standard needle on kick . I will try a smaller pilot or the old pwk I have .
I need to get the starting issue sorted as was embarrassing and makes you not want to tackle the harder hills. Standing up with kick stand down was easiest way to get a good long kick.
Power was good but not over the top. In fact it wasn't wheel standing as easily as I would have expected. I do think I may prefer the 250 2T than the 300. I would like the power come in a bit earlier and have more of a hit .
It was great on the hills though and power out of corners was real nice.
It felt better when you were right into it but it did take a lot more out of you . I don't like just cruising on the torque and cant get right into it for very long so I am feeling its not really for me.

So will try to get the front forks and jetting sorted .

May tweak the TE for a bit more power with a Pro Circuit pipe - but not sure if that will make it much better. Like its quietness and the way it revs to the moon - even if you are not travelling that fast .

Boogie has leant me a modified muffler to try as well - cheers mate

Yeh it would be 6.5k ride away.We moved over from NZ late 2012 and tried to get one then as we had to sell all our bikes(08 wr250 08 cr125 gasgas ec125)before we came over, but you couldn't get them then so bought the 11 te250.The 250's a great little bike just put a full titanium arrow system on it and still have to fit the 12 port injector and ecu so should sharpen it up a bit,but still think the 125 is a more sustainable longer term bike.

Hey Rockdancer,I see your having some starting issues,if your going to stay with the mikuni the JD kit is a must. With my 300 it takes a bit when cold some times but when warm 1 to 2 kicks is all it takes.I was just looking at my maintenance book today and in the last 37hrs all I've had to do is gearbox oil and air filters, bike has 86hrs on it now still original chain and sprockets, these things are tough.

+1 JD fo sho on TMX. They use a 32.5 PJ. Also a must is to adjust the float. Starting bikes that are too rich with float and pilot is hard.

I think the 250 r is much better than old 250 mainly due to the injection and better wiring -fuel pump issues sorted
    And more Down low power
    I nearly bought a Wr 125 13 but decided I'd like a change

It's really just the needle then isn't it ? What float height should we be at -- It runs fine though apart from startd

Needle is said to be lean. Pilot too rich. Main is just about right. Nozzle is lean too. JD fixes all circuits including nozzle. I just kept bending float until gas no longer poured out when bike at 45* angle.

Also, for cold starts when bike hasn't ran for days use NO throttle when kicking.

Get a better needle (JD or DEY) and try a 35 pilot.

    Definitely get the forks sorted.

Yeh I know, the TE125 will be 10.5k and also not fond of the orange undercoat!so never gunna be an option.I've got the WR on hold for a week or so, just need all the planets to align to make it happen.

wondering if this wr300 has a heavier duty clutch or springs in it
Clutch pull is heavier than standard and i was given original clutch plates and springs.
Previous owner said it was done two years ago when he bought it
Weird that clutch had to be redone after approx 1 year
I think it was raced for a season
Old Springs are 40mm - supposed to be 43 min
    Plates are around 2.95mm

Starts easy now with a 30 pilot
Adjusted fork clickers to softer setting
If that doesn't work will try looking at oil type and amount

Even though I had issues on the ride looking forward to riding it again now.

Strangely I hadn't washed bike but a fair bit of water Came out of head stem area when it was angled back on a raised stand
