125-200cc wr360 shock trouble

I have a 98 wr360 and it has the sachs rear shock any way the shock shaft has snapped I rode it the last time in the bush was ok when riding got it home and off the trailer went to ride it out the driveway to the car wash and heard clunk as the rear end sunk.

I knew something had give way I thought it might have blown a seal but I rolled it back up to my shed and seen the shaft sitting on an odd angle and I was able to move it about with my fingers so the sock is completely stuffed is there another shock that I can use I think the problem occured because I should have had it rebuilt and a stiffer spring I am fairly tall and heavy so I should have changed the spring and set the sag.

What are my options I have sunk way more than the bike is worth I am thinking I might rebuild it from the ground up if I can get the rear shock for it again what models interchange, thanks Michael.

Can we see a picture of the shock? While it's possible that the shaft broke, that would be really unlikely, the shafts are pretty thick and the way the shock is mounted doesn't put much (if any) bending load on the shaft.

I think that the most likely thing is that the seal head and/or the piston broke in some way. You might be able to find a replacement part for that, but you'll need to open it up to see what's broken.

My brother's 2000 TE410 has a very similar shock (just from looking at the pictures) to yours.

I just looked on ebay and there are a couple shocks for your bike and a couple shocks for TEs of the same vintage on there.

Where are you located?

I'm with Kyle, I'll bet the nut on top of the piston worked it's way off and the piston has come off the shaft.

I think all the sachs shocks around that time are pretty much the same except probably different valving and springs. I think in '02 they got updated with a bigger shaft but it will still fit.

you said put in more than the bike is worth, question is what is the bike worth to you, I have a similar bike as a 99 is the same except the forks are inverted, personally I like mine, on that note do you want to replace it if so get a used shock and if you want to ride it take it to someone that can rebuild it and set it up for your weight and riding style

Let us know where you live. There might be a local suspension guy who can fix your shock right up. I'd offer to take a look at it but it sounds like you might be in OZ...

Michael aka Frostywr360...when you say the shock shaft has snapped, are talking about the chrome shaft?

Two possibilities, 1) As Kyle Tarry described and 2). The top mount has sheared off due to the top mounting bearing seized causing a small crack at first then followed by a the whole thing snapping (happened to me with a sachs).

Nevertheless, unbolt the stinger, take the seat off, loosen the rear clamp where the airbox boot meets the carb, take the subframe bolts out and lift the whole rear subframe up...this will reveal the top shock mount and it's as simple as unbolting the lower and upper shock bolts.

If it's a snapped top mount, then you can source the Sach shock from a 98-2004 WR250 and 360 and the TE's (possibly pre KYB's will still fit).

If it's as Kyle Tarry suggested, take the shock to (and l don't know where you are in Australia but lets presume Melbourne), either Chad's Offroad, Krooztune, Choice Suspension, Byrners in Seaford...in fact your local husky dealer and any motorcycle mechanic worth their salt should be able to rebuild the unit.

Thanks I am in Geelong Victoria Australia, the chrome shaft has snapped from what I can see but down low and it broke the bump stop too I might get it out and get a pic I have had it off before I replaced the linkage and swingarm bearings a while ago, thanks Michael.

Tell ya what Mick, you are extremely unlucky to snap the chrome shaft. Take it to Chad's Offroad in 1 Edols St Geelong and all you can do is ask whether Chad can get you a chrome shaft made or even source one off another shock unit....it's a pity as l think l threw out my snapped top mount Sachs but l'll have a look for ya tomorrow/today. If l've got it, l'll PM ya and drop it off.

I'd LOVE to see a picture of this broken shaft. Be curious to try to see what precipitated this!

I have read about the shaft snapping on the threads that attach to the clevis which is all due to poor maintenance with the linkage bearings..and sorry mate, l threw out the old sach shocker that l had

No worries I will get a pic tomorrow and post it up I didn't think a snapped shaft was a common occurrence and I had problems when I bought the bike I don't think much maintenance if any had been done and someone ran a bigger than standard front sprocket that cut into my swingarm and caused a lot of drama I fixed that with new bearings for the swingarm and linkage and my mate rewelded it up for me I think that is when the damage to the shock may have occured of course it wasn't broken then though and it didn't break on my last ride it broke when I unloaded it and rode it down my drive way which in hindsight was extremely lucky imagine if it went when I was going flat out.

Definitely snapped the shaft on the bottom of the shock sitting at a horrible angle and busted the bump stop I should have cleaned it but I cracked it when that happened and rolled it back in the shed and haven't touched it since I have had a lot of trouble with it and it took me a while to calm down about this, thanks Michael.
