  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

08 SM510R exhaust system reassembly questions

Bike is an 08 510 that I bought last month. Due to my work, I only am able to ride on the weekends, so the past few, I have been doing just that. This weekend, however, is dedicated to maintenance and a few mods.

When purchased, the bike's exhaust system was wrapped in a DEI titanium wrap (from header to muffler). I talked to Bill from 113Moto a couple weeks ago regarding a different issue and he mentioned that he advises against exhaust wraps because they retain too much heat in the pipe. It also was becoming brittle and looked kind of crappy so I removed the headers, midpipe, and muffler from the bike and took off the wrap. A couple of questions:

1) The metal appears to be discolored and a bit rusty. There is also mesh like coloration pattern that the wrap left behind. What's the best way to clean up the pipes to make them look a little cleaner and maybe polish them up a little bit? Steel wool? Sandblasting? Are they steel, aluminum, or titanium?

2) What is the best way to reassemble the pipes to ensure that they are sealed and free of leaks? RTV silicone? If so, how do you apply it; just put some on the joints before connecting?

3) I noticed that one of the headers was very loose and once I took the spring off, it came off effortlessly. Even with the spring still connected, there was still a lot of wiggle in the header. The other one was rock solid and took some muscle to get off after removing the spring; I assume that is how both of them want to be. How do I fix this? Do I need to replace that spring? If so, where can I get them?

Hi

1: I would clean them well with diesel and use 1000 grit sandpaper then paint the pipes with heatpaint (Silver, black or whatever you like)

2: I never used any silicone or stuff like that, just make sure the springs are in place, the heat will make the pipes expand and seal them.

3: About your loose header i wouldent know, normally they sit tight in place as your other pipe. As long as the exhaust is sealed and not leaking i woulden care about it. Below is a link to a site that got all the parts you need!

The absolute best muffler black paint you can get is from John Deere, believe it or not. The stuff is like $25US a can, but well worth it. Not sure if it's available in your country, but every John Deere implement and service center in the US carries it.
