• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

18" wheel conversion for 79 250 OR

What have you guys used to convert to 18" rear wheel. I am looking for what size rim width I would need to buy to lace up a spare hub I have. I'm looking to DIY this and am hoping to leverage those that have done this.
thanks,
w

I used a 82 18" wheel on my build and a mid eighties hub with s.s. spokes but my 79 rear wheel spacer did not work out so I am hunting down a mid eighties spacer for it . I guess if you went with the 79 hub you would be okay.

Buchannan spokes makes a set that will lace up a 18" rim to your 79 hub.Just bought one.Just make sure your clear that you want a 18" set and if your rim has a drop center to it

Rim width depends on what kind of tire footprint you are after. 2.15 width came stock on most Asian 250cc and open dirt bikes and will deliver a taller tire and narrower width footprint. I imagine that would be more desirable for woods riding. 2.50 width rims deliver a wider footprint and are better suited to soft terrain like sand or mud. It all comes down to what you want your bike to do and what and where you ride. Both size rims will fit your bike and will work.

I would upgrade to the non conical hub and just get a used wheel. Might need a different backing plate and spacer on the other side. I am not too familiar with 1979, Does the backing plate just attach to the swingarm with an aluminum bar perhaps a foot long?

Is you question whether to get a 2.15 or 2.50 wide rim or maybe 2.75?

I do not know if the spoke holes in the husky rims of this section have different spoke angles for conical hub vs non conical hub. Conical hub has longer spokes on the non brake side. Ideally they should be drilled different. The ones for the non conical hubs seem always to be nordisk (or a spelling real close) rims with a date on them.

Thanks for the input, I have picked up a spare '79 hub cheap in good condition and am looking to buy just a rim....just not sure what to look for, also plan on going with the SS spokes and nipples as mine are worn and rusted. I am building a woods racer with some MX mixed in and am looking for better tire choices with the 18". I have the frame just about ready for paint and the whole thing should look like new when I get finished.

pretty sure my conical hub 79 had akronts on it...i dont think it would be too hard to put an early eighties rear wheel...would be a nice upgrade

Just recently post a pic of my 78cr in the picture section with a 83 rear wheel.had to shorten a 77 spacer to make it work

that rear wheel looks like the same as an 85 XC wheel I have, probably changed the spacer sizes over the years
Husky was pretty good about sticking with what worked for years

If you are buying a new rim from Buchanan, buy the Sun rim and not any of the cheaper off road rims. The Excel rims are too soft and will deform easily

so you are saying the excel takasago rims dont hold up? i was thinking of switching some of my nordisk equipped bikes for excels...i know takasago is the higher grade compared to the regular excels

They do seem to hold up amongst the best. All of my Huskys have the original rims and the ones with Nordisk have the least amount of deformity with signs of abuse present.

okay guys, thanks for the info...i havent had problems with any of my nordisc, but always hear about how good takasagos are

the only problem with the Nordisk wheels is where they drilled them for studs to grip the tires they crack
