• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

1978 250 leak- Can you help?

Ok. I posted earlier about the carb and thankfully got the bike going. It runs pretty good. Rattles some and is very loud, but runs and idles well. BUT, I do have a leak and need some help-

The previous owner claimed in was a 76 WR250. I think this is wrong. The frame number is mysteriously painted over and the engine number is 2065, which I think is a 78 CR. He also said that the crank case was a random replacement, which is why it says CR and not WR. The bike also has gold rims. I do not exactly trust him.

Right now I have a pretty nice leak that I need fixed. It seems like oil because it is thick and doesn't smell like gas. I think its coming from the crank case on the left side, but there is a gasket and the bolts are quite tight. When I got the bike, I put in 1 quart of 30w oil. It shifts well, but leaks a lot.

This is my first Husky. Are they notorious for leaking? The case doesn't seemed crack. What are yall's opinions?

Clean the bike thoroughly, especially in the area where it leaks. Hopefully you will be able to tell exactly where it's leaking from.
On the left side it could be the side cover or the kick starter shaft, both an easy fix.

It appears to be coming from the bottom left, with would be the clutch side cover. Also, after looking at the manual it appears I do not have a breather hose coming from the oil cap, but a screw instead. Is this OK?

Tha gasket didn't appear to have any sealant. Is this the fix?

You may have too much oil in it ,there is a screw on the side cover that is an oil level hole make sure bike is level and fill till it drips from the hole. You need a breather hose so you don't get too much pressure in there.

Yes, it should be vented. Just put a piece of fuel line tubing in it and loop it downward.

And what I don't understand is why would the oil cap have a screw there in the first place. I have seen them on eBay with the screw as well

Can you explain the threaded hose barb? please excuse my ignorance. I've only owned new bikes and have little maintenance knowledge.

I've realized the the leak is most definitely came from the place where the shifter/kick start case meets the engine. Could this be solved be a proper gasket fix with some great sealant?
