  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

1978 WR250 throttle cable

Greetings all, I'm just putting the finishing touches on a 1978 WR250, and ran into trouble with the throttle cable. Stock had an outer housing measuring 40 3/8". I initially bought a new one on ebay, NOS aftermarket, correct outer, inner too short by 1/4"- not enough slack to get a good idle. So I bought a Motion Pro 10-0000, which is cataloged for the old beast- outer housing was 34 5/8", and it won't reach the carb at full LH steering lock. Anyone have luck with any particular vendor? Did Motion Pro send one that was packaged incorrectly? Any help is appreciated!

I use Venhill cables. You need to tell them what throttle and carb you are using. Mine has been perfect. Just make sure the routing is correct.
My 78 390WR will be exactly the same as yours (Mikuni).

Thanks for the input, I'll look them up. My bike is pretty much original, whirlpool throttle, stock bars, and Mikuni, so a stock spec cable should be fine.

Whirlpool placed just above the brake perch, cable going outside the RH fork tube, under the bottom of the tank on the RH side of the frame below the coil, down to the carb. Until I get a fresh cable, I modified my first cable (ebay) by carefully removing 3/8" of outer housing- works fine now. When I bought the bike (semi-basket), the original cable was still there, although seized, and I matched the outer housing length with the ebay cable- same length.

i think the reason you are having the problem at left hand lock is the cable routed outside of the RH fork leg...i have always had mine run inside that fork tube..

Frankly, I had the longer of the two cables inside the tube, and it was fine either way. The only way the short cable would reach is if it ran straight from the throttle to the carb, past the RH side of the tank- clearly unacceptable.
