• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

1979-84 air box & frame identification

Guy,
Just got another Husky parts phone call recently "Hey John , I just bought some Husky parts as i always wanted one, can i put a 79 engine in a 82 frame?" or something like that. Usually it's No
you should have called before you bought all those parts. Well i've got a bunch of extra frames now, and thought i show what air boxes go with which frames. It may save someone from buying more parts they can't use.

The 1979 thru 82 frames basically are the same using the same style airbox where the airfilter is removable thru the right side cover. The CR frames are different then the XC, OR or WR because
of the CR's floating rear brake which needs a right side bracket for the arm to mount to. Also
the CR doesn't have the rear seat frame loop & the center engine loop. Beware i've seen the rear seat loop cut off of plenty of bikes, so look for those 3 key identification points.

Now the 83 & 84 frames uses a different air box from the 79-82 & requires the seat to be removed. The CR frames have a similar right side bracket as the 79-82 for the floating brake arm & also the seat loop & lower frame loop. Don't always assume because the frame is white it's a 83 or 84, i've seen some painted silver too.

And last but not least the 84 have the steering head tucked in to 28 degree compared to the 30.5 of the 1979-83 bikes. But watch some 84 bikes were really 83 leftover so the they still use the older frame. Of course it always help to have time to look up the frame serial number too. Hope this helped someone.

What you left out has to do with that squashed tube near the left foot peg on the silver frame you seem to be calling 79-82. That is needed for certain engines, I know the 360 standard shift will fit in one if you swithch the parts the swing arm attaches to and make your own front plates. Something like a 420 auto will not fit into the white frame as it hits in that location. maybe elsewhere in the rear as well. The white frame you call 83-84 is harder to get a swolen ankle on but still can hit the shock absorber when the logs and stuff knock your feet/legs back. The white (dual shock) frame has a bit of an offset to the front pipe if it isn't a water cooled or perhps four stroke. The exhaust pipes are designed to go around the frames. and probably in a mix and match the pipe ought to correspond to the frame more than the engine.

Go info Fran  , but i wasn't going for which motor fits in which frame here. Just trying to show some of the identification points of what make a CR vs WR,OR or XC frame & which air box goes with which frame. There's probably too many combinations to list ,if you want to mix & match frame & engines.

Fran does point out a goodie. split downtube front pipes are for WC twins shockers and single dwntube fore Air cooled. this is for 83-85 white frames

Does anybody know if it is possible to fit a 82 250 motor into a 83/84 4T white frame ? and or what issues there might be ?
cheers

I would think the issues would be mostly with the exhaust side covers and airbox. It is kind of a shame to go that way as for the guys to go the reverse way, putting the air cooled four stroke engine in the 83/84 frame they have to do frame mods to get extra room for the carb. At least from the pictures I see, my four stroke is an 88. The exhaust for the 82 engine won't go around the shock and frame near your left thigh without some effort and I don't know if the exhaust mounts are on the frame or how the tank might work out. If you don't have an engine to fit that frame you probably could trade for a two stroke frame, air box plastic and maybe even exhaust pipe. I don't have a suitable pipe but wouldn't mind having one of those frames in the collection.

One thing to look at with the white ITC frames is if the front down tube has a bend in it. If so it was a 500. The air cooled 500 ITC frame have that because the jug was bigger and the bend was for the exhaust. I had one for sometime.

The 83/84 2 stroke frames have a kink in the lower front frame tube & the motor is NOT center in the frame, as it is on the 4 stroke frames.
Early 4 stroke (twin shock) frames are very rare & I would hate to see one cut up to fit a easy to find 2 stroke frame. I've posts pics
of a 2 stroke & 4 stroke frames. I'd gladly trade a 82 CR frame or 83 frame for a 4t one.

Hi guys.
Now I need your experience and help because I found a frame which I supposed to be a 500 but my books say it is not.
The serial number is XO 04739.
I could have a 500 engine to put in and I just want be sure not to make mistakes.
Thanks in advance everybody.

Would anyone know if the rake angle change corresponded with the capping of those tubes near the top shock mount in the 1984-1985 era. There is an extra chain adjuster pusher bolt added around that time though swingarms can get changed.

Sorry I don't operate in number mode on this type of device. You do need to match the swingarm pivot hole diameter.
