  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

1982 430 odd gearbox issue

Hi,

Got the husky ready to go. Started 4th kick after complete engine rebuild. Selected first and moved off no issues. She selected all gears nicely.

Issue came when sat in neutral. Was letting engine Tick over with no issues. When I started to rev engine hard to clear her, the bike lurched forward very slightly and stalled also making a screeching noise.the gbox is still in neutral. At first I thought it had seized, but she kicked back to life easily.

If I repeat the trick with the clutch pulled in, it doesn't do it....?

I think I might have a shim in wrong, but wondered if anyone else has had similar issue before I split the engine yet again....****************************************!!!

I had a sort of similiar problem with my 82 430CR, i'm revving bike up on starting line in neutral, bike lurched forward and stalled. Restart,
started the race, but didn't make it more then a couple of turns, no transmission at all. My tranny jammed in between gears or something as it was a mess, also my shifter engaging mechanism was badly worn, so that may have cause all my problems. Never had a problem before this point always shifted fine, clutch worked well too.

I'd check your shifter engaging mechanism 1st, at least all you need to do is take off the clutch cover.

I had an extremely similar occurance last year with my 1988 430. It was like the engine ruined something in the gearbox it was in neutral and I just revved it perhaps it jumped into gear or something but it wasn't good like split the cases coming on. what I think in my case was the intermediate gear in the starter spit a tooth. I did re start it and make my ride but that gear got switched out for the best used one I had that matched and it hasn't done it this year.

I've got to pull a 250 down this week with that kind of problem.
This one feels like the gears are loaded up.
Am thinking that the bearing at the clutch lever is not all the way in the case.

I'm going to split to split the engine again. I've got some ideas...I bought a box off eBay only to find It was a WR box. I did use one of the shafts....I did check sizes etc and thought they were identical, but looking at the parts lists they aren.t..?

When I split the engine originally I did find one of the spacers was conical like it had been pressed hard into a gear.
I'll post up pictures when I split it......unfortunately that won't be for another week as I'm sunning myself in Greece at the moment...

Good luck and have a Ouzo or two for me !

The TOOL who put these cases together [ mate of mine ] has put one of the clutch shims on the output shaft because it looked like it fitted.
This loaded up the gears which would have seized if the motor had been run.

I borrowed my cousin's '82 250CR for the ISDT Reunion Ride last year. While waiting for the start of the grass track moto, I revved it in neutral to clean it out and it did the same thing everyone else is describing. It made ugly noises and then jumped into gear on its own. It restarted and everything still works exactly like it should. Hearing all these identical events makes me believe its something to do with the shifting mechanism in the side cover.

When mine jumped forward it stayed in neutral....

one thing that I did think of, but think was a red herring was the seal ring on the drive sprocket ?..

The manual showed a seal holder so stupidly I installed a seal....same as the one behind the mag.

I then struggled to get the ring on that sits behind the sprocket and had to machine it to get it to fit. I found out that without the seal the ring sits against the drive bearing.

I did wonder if by fitting a seal and tightly fitting the ring I might have taken up any end float on the drive shaft...??

I will take the seal out and fit new ring and try it, but I don't think that is cause of my woes....??

I might be completly off coarse here but I recently had a Shifting issue mine would downshift fine but not up shift beyond 2 nd gear very easy. Turned out the Pin in the Clutch cover was not splitting the Shifter Return Spring and was ending up on one side of it. Easy Fix, just a thought.
