  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

1982 Ohlins Piggyback ??

I'm having my shocks rebuilt and looking for advice on oil weight and nitrogen charge (stock I believe is 7.5wt and 155lbs). Considering that I have only had this bike ('82 XC250) a short while and I had no idea what the N2 pressure was or the oil weight before pulling them off for rebuild, I don't have a good baseline.

I weigh 225 lbs (6'5") do mostly trail riding occasionally some track and would consider myself a middle of the pack intermediate level rider.

Seperately, since I have not seen a thread on the subject, can one of you please tell me what the differences are between the '82 Olins and the '83 Ohlin ITC's. I realize from the tech data that the ITC's have 20mm more suspension travel along with a single progressive spring, any other differences?

Thanks,
Adam

Good questions. Hopefully someone with knowledge will respond. There is a February 1983 Motorcyclist magazine article on overhaulling piggyback Ohlins which also notes the 7.5wt/155psi specs.

83 OTC's are 18.5" and would be to long for your 82 in my opinion.
The Ohlins piggybacks are 17.25" lenght on the 81/82.
The 83/84 frames have the upper shock mount moved forward and require a longer shock length.

I spoke with Philip at husqvarna-parts about using ITCs on 81-82 bikes. According to him you can change the lower mount to make the ITCs shorter.

I have thought about that because the ITC's have stiffer springs and dampening than the standard Ohlins, I'm 6'2" and 285lbs so I kinda "overpower" stock Ohlins. I bought a set of Ohlins from a expert VMX'r last year, he was 175lbs- they are perfect for me. I have also heard of guys using the ITC springs on the earlier Ohlins also to stiffen them up.

If You search the site there is a lot of info on rebuilding these shocks. Parts and Springs are still avalable for them thats why we don't ride Vintage Asian right. I think You are trying to mix and match Shocks to get what You can have with what You got. Husky@Huskyclub.com Has lots of info and parts as well. He did a set for me and they look better than new.

Was more interested in some advice on oil and N2 pressure. But was wondering about the use of the '83 progressive springs on the '82's, has anyone tried it, were the results satisfactory? I figured if they fit, they might over a little more inital pre-load given what looks like a 20mm longer spring and might be a better option for my weight. I realize that I can buy new heavier springs, but was looking for a potentially cheaper solution with as good of a result.

Old post, but I just rebuilt the Ohlins on my '82. Maxima 10wt "heavy" shock oil was very close to the posted Ohlins spec, and it works GREAT so far. I used 160psi nitrogen.
