• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Hey i just got this bike and it has been sitting for 10 years but is in mint shape (besides some rust). Has tons of compression, but i havent started it yet either because i wanna clean everything out. The only thing that concerns me is it wont go in and out of gear. Idk if its because its been sitting so long etc etc. I just got it like an hour ago so im just looking for advice before i tear into it. Somone Rajobigguy said it might be my clutch plates stuck together. Just figured id post here too. thanks.

pic of my bike

you are all ready on the game, before making ideas,. just get into it and do all the cursory stuff and verify all components. nice machine!!

thanks man and yea tomorrow im gonna get it running and pray heat will free the clutch up if thats the case. If not its coming apart.

Before taking the clutch apart be patient...when oil is warm everything will work properly.
I have same problem after some months without firing it...
Great bike, you are lucky....

Very nice bike that .
You can separate the clutch plates through the oil filler hole with a screwdriver.
Check that your coolant/water level remains the same in your radiator.
Water pump can rot out in these as the coolant can react with the magnesium in the clutch case and will dump your coolant into the clutch/gearbox.
If you have to remove the clutch cover don't take the kickstart lever off it's shaft.
Trust me on this.
The gearshift lever can stay also.
You may have a broken spring in the selector workings just under the clutch.
Not hard to fix if you leave the kick starter lever on.:oldman:

You will find that these bikes are nice to ride when sorted.
Will say again "nice bike that".

Yea i got it to shift with out doing anything. It just randomly worked today. I have to clean the tank and carb now. Im pretty sure this thing was winterized before stored. It had no coolant, no gas, and the oil that was in it looked new so i think that was just put in.

great woods bike, sorry i sold mine a few years back, the 400 is probably Husky's best motor

thanks man.

Update: Cleaned out gas tank, put in some mystery oil in the head (small amount), and took off the carb. Currently its sitting in gas because although from what i can see its somewhat clean, it happens to be seized atm.

hmmm, i would do a teardown once you get free...if it ran good and passed a compression test i wouldnt be able to rest easy

OK so all thats left is to get new reed intake boot/manifold. The rubber thing that connects to the reed cage. It was dry rotted to shit.

Took both my 240 and 400 out for a run at a local vinduro on the weekend.
The only problem I had with the 400 was approaching tricky bits in at least 2 gears higher than recommended.:banghead:
Lazy engine and lazy rider.
You supposed learn after trying to start one of these on the side of a hill a couple of times  .

I really like mine. I swapped out the front end for a 45mm inverted zoke and much better brake and I can ride it as fast through the woods as a modern bike. The motor rules. BTW the front end, triple clamps and all bolt right up.
