  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

2008 TE250 Intermittent Hard to Start

Hi All,

Went on my first ride on my new to me TE250 today, bike performed great except towards late in the day it didn't want to stay running (sometimes) and randomly didn't want to start. When it works this bike is a one kick starter (estart doesn't work because it seems I have a weak battery or something is draining my battery - had bike on tender for over 48 hours but estart didn't have enough juice to turn over the engine after overnighting at the campground).

When it doesn't work you can kick until you are blue in the face, and it doesn't so much as fart. But you walk away for a few minutes and come back and it starts on one kick.

Also it began to cut out randomly when I came off throttle, not sure if I can consistently repeat it yet but sometimes when you release the throttle and pull in the clutch, the bike just dies and nothing else happens. Other times the bike will idle correctly.

[1] Is it related to the battery issue or the wiring system?
[2] If something is draining the battery, will putting in a new battery damage it?
[3] Could this be a fueling related issue?
[4] Valve clearance? The PO was more meticulous than me and had records of a very recent value check. Will check them again just in case
[5] What else should I check?

Thanks everyone,

Alex

When late in the day and bike starts acting up, turn it off and then back on and listen to see if the fuel pump priming sounds labored or slow.

When starting the bike and the battery doesnt want to turn it over, try pulling the compression release in, just for a second or two, this will allow the engine to get past the compression stroke and build some momentum.

Put a voltmeter on the battery, it should read 12.7v or higher when off, and it should read 14v or higher when idling. It should not dip below 11v when trying to start it, if it does, it shouldn't for long.

On valve clearance, the right side exhaust is the most critical for starting, it needs to be in spec and not loose. If it's loose, it will contribute to the ADC not working very well.

Thanks OHR, your thread has been most inspiring for me to buy a smaller Husky. I will try all the things you suggested. I think the battery is in fact cooked because even right off the charger it won't crank as fast as yours in your video you showed. I forget but did you decide to go with Lithium?

Thanks,

Alex

I have stayed with lead acid, now on my 3rd battery at 19,000 miles. I have always had to use my compression release when starting, still do, has never caused a problem.

Iridium spark plugs are a great asset to cold starting and or with a weak battery

It'll be a few days before I can work on the bike. Do you guys think the hard to start issue and the cutting out issue are related?
