  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

2011 TE449 Weird rattle

KERMIT_7.62

Husqvarna
B Class
So it seems the famed clutch rattle that comes along with motorcycles of all sorts isn't going away once I pull the clutch lever in. This rattle is still there at low rpms. I cannot hear it at all when the bike is reved or is running, but when in the low rpms, there is a distinctive click / tap noise. It doesn't sound like metal on metal, kind of like chain hitting plastic chain guards. Its not super duper loud, but definitely noticable. This has all started after I changed the oil about a week ago. I used Synthetic 10w40 as specified by the manual and ended up putting about 1L of oil into the bike before the sight glass read properly.

Its still starting very easily hot or cold (typical te449 hot start back firing occasionally) but other than this the bike still wheelies in 4th gear with ease so I can't say Ive noticed a loss in power. Could it be that the oil I used is just too thin at operating temperature? It seems the noise is loudest after Ive warmed her up. Ive ordered some Motul 7100 10w40 which is recommended for my bike.. so I will see how it goes.

Any suggestions welcome! I would rather avoid taking it into a shop as I live in Darwin NT and there is no husky dealer here.

I should mention as well my bike has done 5500km. Cheers
If it started when you changed the oil it is a good place to start looking. Darwin is hot, does it ever get much cooler than 30c there during the day? What was your previous oil warm viscosity?

This used to be a common occurrence. The noise is greatly decreased as you reach the 1100ml oil capacity or beyond. Try sourcing some 5W40 instead of 10 to see if that helps with the noise.

Thanks for the replies guys! Darwin rarely dips below 30 yes, and coming into this time of the year through till about feb-march the humidity is MASSIVE plus 32 degree days av temp sometimes hitting 35-36. The humidity makes it feel a lot warmer than that though. Anyway previous oil in was 10w50 or 60 even I honestly can't remember.

I was thinking maybe the cam chain tensioner but there doesn't seem to be a way to adjust it without removing it, I guess maybe taking it out and cleaning it in solvent would help any potential tensioner issues. I heard they can go bad pretty easily.

Tinken it's interesting you mention that, perhaps I'll add 1100ml of oil during the next change. Cheers!

So I filled her up with 1100ml of Motul 7100 10w40 (Couldn't find any 50 or 60) and I must say it cured the problem straight away. No more clacking or clattering at idle, smoother gear changes too. I've also noticed the bike running a lot cooler on the highway now. Speaking of highway, wheres the best place to grab a 47t sprocket for this bike in aus? The stock rear is waaaaay too short for highway use.

Yeah I thought so. There seems to be some people online who are running 10w60 in these bikes though :S

Is it possible I have noticed a slight power increase straight off the bottom end? Im thinking the oil I ran for the past week was really bad.. This new stuff seems to have breathed new life into the terminator449

Castrol Power 1 Racing is readily available at all Super Cheap stores in Aus.
5w40 full synthetic. 200 hrs on my Qld based TE449 so far without dramas. (plenty of 35deg days in summer)
Maybe give that a run next change.
Running heavy oils just works the oil pumps harder as they come up to pressure and then pump the extra volume out of the relief valve to the sump.
Flow is more important than pressure, as long as you reach the correct pressure.
