  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

2013 310r TXC engine demise - ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Mike Mclennan

A Class
I have just had a very unfortunate circumstance, the result is an engine damaged worse than the motorcycle mechanic has seen in 30 years****************************************! So without them opening up the bottom end it is a cracked head (may not be able to be repaired, new valves, new bore and new piston rings etc. They have not split the gearbox yet to examine damage to crank etc.

You might ask how this happened, our gardiner while I was away decided to convince someone who had access to my shed to give him the keys then took without permission to take my txc310 for a spin, this with never having ridden a motorbike other than a ds80 I had given him a 5 minute instruction on how to ride once previously. It's a third world country here and trying to figure out what exactly happened is difficult. I assume it was revved out in neutral or first gear and has destroyed the engine. Then the mechanic reackons they must have pulled it behind a car to try and start it as there simply couldn't be that much damage from the engine alone.

He no longer works for me obviously! I feel like everything you worked for and saved up for has just been taken away from me in an instant, it is kind of like the measure of putting the bike first or the family/home/mortgage/children etc etc etc

WE had Cyclone Pam rip through here (Vanuatu) a few months back so you have high outgoings on repairs and low in-comings on work so financially things are simply going to have to wait anyhow.

All I can see is it costing a couple of thousand dollars or more, in Aus for repair then going over to pick it up to bring it back again $ again.
USD an ebay engine is 2000USD plus freight plus duty. Current to Aud/USD exchange makes this option over $3000.

Anyway I am not writing this to moan further, I am over that, but in moving forward does anybody have any cheap options or suggestions of getting out of this?

Michael.

You still have the frame and everything for a bike and you could maybe drop another engine brand in there till another Husky engine comes around ... And I know that sucks but you be on the road again ... If you go this route, you'll want to make sure any work for mounting a different engine does not destroy anything that will stop the true engine from going back in the frame correctly ...

Ok have a Rough price guide from dealer.

Cylinder piston kit $1300
Crank complete $780
Valves $70 ea x4
Cylinder head $1200
Gasket set $155
Main bearings $75 ea x2

Total $3820 Aud + labour (at exchange that is about $3000 USD )

This is besides what looks to be crankcase damage so bill would be closer to $5000.

My bike only had 20 hours on it and bought only 12 months ago.
The one on GUMTREE listed for $5500 with 5 hours actually looks like a good deal, but I would have to part out the rest of the bike which is a bit difficult living here, I would also have to come up with that much cash!!! Some of these 2013/14 txc310's like mine sold 12 months ago for $6400 on run brand new.

Michael.

I figure I will just have to wait till one comes up salvaged I guess.

I do have my DRZ at the moment which I can still ride, but it is a very heavy bike for the type of riding we do.

You can get a 3rd party piston and ring set for ~$200 or OEM for $290 and maybe an online shop can re-sleeve that cylinder for much less than that $1,000 that would be left over from that $1300 cylinder piston kit .... What is in that kit exactly?

What is wrong with the head exactly?
What is wrong with the crank exactly? You must be getting a crank and connecting rod for that price? Again, you might can break that all down and do better on the pricing ...

Cases can be toasted ..What is exactly wrong there?

Gaskets can be over the top ... Maybe buy only what you really need (head & cylinder base ?) and make some on your own ....

I should add the prices are for my TC250 2010 model so parts for that 310 might be a little more expensive ...

I only have the pictures to go off as the engine is with the dealer in Aus.
I was told the head was cracked, could possibly be repaired by an engineering shop, but he had no experience to know whether this is plausible.
The cylinder bore I was told needs to be replaced, however I guess it can be resleeved if that is possible.
As for the Case the exact words given were below. but I requested an indicator so I could have an idea of where to go from here.
To me if the crank needs replacing the head the bore the piston the valves, we start talking about something that is not viable to repair.
If the Aud to USD was parity like it was a year or so ago I would be buying a s/h one for $2000 out of the US and freight it.
As per piston photo a lot of alloy has gone through bottom end (crank mains etc)
These also seems to be some damage to cases which i need to investigate further

You live on that small island out east of Australia in the Pacific?

Park it and ride that drz ...many ride them and like it.

I was just reading you guys got your independence from the Brits & French in the 70s? How was that move? 70s were alright with me back in the states ... Till the count ran into the 80s ..

try riding a hard enduro hill climbs on a bike that weighs 125kg and lift it off the ground a dozen times!
You don't get invited out riding when you are that slow, and everybody has to weight on you, the bike makes a big difference.
It won't be long before you start wishing you had something lighter, the very reason why I bought the 310.

I wasn't here for Independence, I would be happy with the place right now If I didn't have to think about things like the locals taking advantage of you and screwing up what you have. The people are nice here because nothing matters, including taking advantage of others, in its essence it is a culture of socialism.......
I brought the bike over in four lots of luggage so was a significant effort.
I married into the culture 13 years ago, one of my boys is in the pic left.

Anyway I had an American on a boat practically land on my front lawn a few months ago with the cyclone that cost him about 80 grand in damages to boat salvage etc. So a few grand is nothing I guess.

Mike.

Are you an American? Just curious ...

I'm riding trails are age 57 and yep, it ain't so easy as it was even 5 yrs back ..Go back 10 yrs and much easier ... I might have to downsize from a 250 sized bike in a few more yrs if I don't keep my head on straight and understand my age ...

--

These guys here are just out to have a good time each day and at night also, I just go home early to be safe and I'll admit, I can't hang all day and all night ... Not sure what you would call it but I'm not afraid of the different ways of governing I was taught earlier in life that were so awful ... All just people with different terms and labels being applied by those in power who do the regulating .... Gotta regulate the masses always or you might be in Somalia ...

I am Australian 100kg 6 foot 40 years old this year. I can ride the DRZ it is just a heavy bike for the type of track we do, If I then take it on the motocross track while I can get around on the DRZ it is obviously not the right bike for that which again is why I bought the TXC which in theory is ideal for both.

Anyways I guess I will just try to keep looking for an accident damaged TE250/310 in Australia, but this could take six months or more.

Mike.
