  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

2013 TE 449 Replacement Handlebars

OK. I loaned my 2013 TE 449 to a friend who kind of high-sided it hard enough to ruin the left Acerbis Rally Pro X-strong and the handlebars. He's good for it so I'm making a laundry list of replacement parts.

The biggest issue is the handlebars. they're slightly bent and I'm replacing them. I've never replaced handlebars nor have I replaced the controls on handlebars so I don't know what exactly is needed.

Here are some questions I hope you can help me with.

What size bars do I need? I want to make sure the bars will install on existing mounting.

I prefer a taller bar from stock so I'm thinking about getting one of the taller bars like the Renthal Fat Bar or Pro Taper whatever. I just want to make sure the internal and external bar diameter will work with my existing stock controls.

Will I be able to re-use the throttle tube?

All other visible damage is to plastics which I can replace. I've never wrecked a bike like that so I'd like some help with other suggested areas to check. Bike seems to ride fine as I had to ride it out and home which consisted of a couple of miles of fire road and 20 miles of slab.

Are you sure they're bent? They have rubber mounts and could be just misaligned. (back in the day, steel handlebars were changed 2x's a season... I love modern aluminum 7/8" bars, which usually have a crossbar btw)

Your stock 1-1/8" bars are pretty standard, 32" width is consider normal (I like 30"). If you have bark busters, the Twin Walls might need a different mount. You'll need new grips more than likely (clutch side gets destroyed sometimes during removal; try carb cleaner if you wanna try to save it). Throttle tube: maybe, maybe not. Take your throttle off (easy) and check; a spare throttle tube in the garage could be a good thing though (<$15 usually).

A taller bar might be okay, but if you have hand guards... you might have mounting issues- minor to major.

It's a good time to service your headstock bearings too; remove the top triple clamp, gently drop the entire front end down about an inch or two, and clean, inspect and re-grease the bearings. Lift the front end back up with your toe while you re-install the triple clamp.

good luck.

Thanks Shovelhead.

I'll check the alignment and I'll inspect/regrease the bearings since I'll be right there. That's the kind of info I was hoping to get.

Left grip is toast so I'm getting new grips.

If I do end up replacing bars, how do I select the correct fitting throttle tube? Like I said, I've never done this type of work and don't know how proprietary handlebar controls are. I know there are after-market throttle tubes I'd like to experiment with if I'm going to have to replace them I'd like to play with. You mentioned my stock bars are 1 -1/8". I assumed the Husky is all metric. Or are the bars different in that respect?

I'm a very capable mechanic so I'm not worried about doing my own work. I'm mostly worried about buying the wrong fitting parts for the project.

Yes, these are 1 - 1/8" bars AKA "fat bars" compared to the standard 7/8" bars. ANY fat bar will fit the OEM Husky bar mounts and throttle tube. The stock ones were Magura but Renthal Pro Taper Tag Metals etc all fit.
