  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

2013 TE Supermoto SM wheels, radiator guards, horn

K5PL5

Husqvarna
Pro Class
Hello all, Im looking to get a set of SM wheels on my TE 449 by the summer. Can anyone who has some experience with this swap point me in the right direction? I see motostrano has wheelsets....how good are warp 9 rims? Anyone else offer them? Will I retain a speedo with these wheels? Are there any Husqvarna wheels in 17" that would possibly fit this platform?
Next question-Who has decent radiator braces/guards for the TE models?
Last question-Has anyone else relocated their horn and stainless line from the front of the right side radiator? I moved my horn up behind the headlight assy. I modded the horn bracket and bolted it on the bottom of the triple clamp on the right side handlebar mount bolt. Fits nicely in their. I was concerned a branch or something might mash the horn into the radiator.
Thank in advance.

Can't help with the rad guards I'm sure someone will chime in on those.

I have dealt with Motostrano, good outfit. Expect 4 weeks for a custom wheel set build.
I''l be having a set of 17" warp 9's built for my 12 TE310 by them as soon as I make up my mind about the 4.5" vs. 5" rear wheel.
4.5 is good for a 150 tire, quick turning, lighter weight. 5" will run a wider 160, stable turns, have to scrape pegs before it will break traction.

Warp 9 are not the greatest wheels in the world but they're not crap either. I ran them on a KTM 525 SMR with no issues. On par with stock DRZ400sm wheels and many others.
I'm just riding street with them and keeping my stock 18/21 for weekend trail duty. I would avoid anodized rims, they fade over time and clear starts to peel after a few years. Powdercoating lasts much longer.
If you plan to do big jumps, ride up and down stairs all day or want to get into competitive supermoto spend the extra $200 for some Excel rims. Stronger and lighter.

Thier hubs do not have a speedo drive gear. You will need to use a pickup magnet and a speedo like Trail Tech vapor to read your speed.
I plan to use my Garmin with a Touratec mount for speedo in town. Worked fine on the KTM with the exception of 3PM sun right behind me.

Make sure you get the front brake relocation bracket for the 320mm brake rotor.
You'll want it over the stock rotor, it's really strong and you already have an excellent Brembo brake setup.

As far as I know most if not all Husqvarna SM wheels fit the TE series. 510, 630. Husaberg and Gas Gas wheels I'm told fit. Check first. axle diameter, spacer width, sprocket offset.
I'm looking into KTM now, they've been making sumo's for the longest and have the most changes but there are some compatible wheel sets.

Wheeling cycle supply also has sumo wheels. As for Forrest, hes cool. I've only dealt with them on DRZ parts so husky may not be thier thing.

An inexpensive option if you don't plan to switch back and forth from street to dirt is have your stock wheels re-laced with 17's.
Excel rims can be found new for around a $100 a piece. Add spokes/labor only looking a couple bills a wheel. You'll need the European style 36 hole wheels.
You can also have them built as Tubless rims and shave another 1/2 lb off each wheel. More of a racing thing but I always thought it was kind of cool.

I just put together a set of SM wheels for my 8 TE510. The wheels are stock 630 wheels. There are sets available frequently. Check CH, Thumpertalk and eBay. I payed $600 for the set.

I used the Warp 9 front brake re-locator and the rotor from a 2012 630 SM (Breaking 320mm). If I had that choice again, I would go with a rotor that is intended to be used with the smaller TE caliper. Not that there's any problem, but only the outside 2/3 of the rotor gets used. The setup works great. I can easily lift the rear wheel when stopping.

I'm running the Contiforce SM tires. The only time I've experienced any loss of traction is when leaned over hard and WFO in 1st gear. Otherwise it's rock solid right up to the edge of the rubber. I'm still getting used to the crazy lean angles that are possible.

I used the stock 14/42 gearing. The rear rotor is the red 'Husqvarna' Supersprox unit. I'm happy with that choice.

Oh, you'll need a shorter kick stand. The 630 part works well. Maybe a tad too short, but stable.

I use my existing Garmin Montana on a RAM mount for the speedometer.

Warp 9 has a lifetime warranty , anything goes wrong, crash, race , $20 service charge and you can get any color spoke rim , hub... Best deal there is on new rims, unmatched service..... Also I have a warp 9 320 mm wave rotor and the caliper adapter , been on my bike for 150 miles, they are new.... $85 each new , $150 shipped Great budget brake setup, too much brake for offroad forks, that's a good thing, covers 100% of rotor

I like this :)

Thanks for the input guys!
Some great info.
Ive dealt with Forrest before when I had an 07 DRZ400SM. Good guy. Its kinda funny cuz Ive had an 07 SM510R, 07 S610, and the DRZ but ive never bought a dual sport before so Im really excited to have an SM wheel set for this bike.

Placed the order for my TE supermoto conversion from Motostrano this morning. Called ahead to confirm fitment and availabilty, both are good.
Went with the 4.5" rear wheel, red hub & black rims. $887 with both brake rotors, relocation bracket and 44T sprocket. No tax or ship charge. Should arrive in 2 weeks.
Not bad at all.

Got some axle sliders for dirt cheap as well.
Replacement slider spools were $1 each, yes a buck! 4 new slider pucks only cost $25 so I figured it's even cheaper than using skateboard wheels.
I'll just thread some bar stock and use nylok nuts to mount them though the axles once I get the thread pitch off the spools.

Here is what the warp 9 set up looks like. For a non-race set up they seem to be pretty good.

I have an extra rear brake rotor 240MM and front brake relocator for the 320mm front that fit the 449/511 bikes if anyone is looking.

I was talking to Scott last week and he mentioned that he had just sold another set of the Warp 9's. Must have been talking about you. I bought the same colors. Cant beat the price. I bought mine from him last year with Avon Distanzias SM specific tires. How did yours fit up? Any issues? Scott was great with helping me out with making sure the proper hub width was ordered. Warp 9 was also very helpful and on top of things. Only issue was they sent the wrong from caliper bracket. I just ran the OEM disc until the right bracket arrived. My set up is on a TXC250 and its a blast on the tight twisty back roads! Let me know what you think of the 449 with SM wheels. I was thinking of making the switch!IMG_0683.JPG

Love your bike man! Looks good. I bet shes a little ripper. You might want to wait and see how this all plays out with the alleged purchase of Husky by KTM. If youre not worried about parts issues, the TEs will probably get even cheaper til theyre all gone. the BMW financing is awesome right now; I have both Huskys thru that. Low interest rate. I rode my TE where I normally ride the WR, in some tight single track and it felt a bit long and was somewhat fatiguing-extra weight of the bike Im sure. But as a dual sport, I freakin love it. Ive ridden the 511 SMR and liked that alot. I cant imagine mine wont be any fun :)
Do you ever come out to the Ephrata bike meet? We usually meet up there and go on a supermoto assault though the backroads of PA.

Thanks! Bike is sweet in the tight stuff but on the straights it runs out of steam. I have a 14t to throw on the front but weather has been crappy here. Nothing better than swapping wheels out and hitting the dirt or vise versa. Looks like you guys got yourself into some trouble with the law! Ha! Sweet video! Looks like a freakin blast! I havnt ridden the back roads of PA since I had a R1 in '04. Sold it when my son was born and stuck with dirt. The SM wheels are bringing me back into the game. I actually decided to keep the TXC. Way too much fun. Going to look at a TC449 this week. Just wondering about the 5 speed tranny. If I get one it will be my new SM bike and the TXC will be dirt only. I will switch all of my lights and such over as well. When is the Ephrata bike meet? I want to know what you think of the TE when you ride it with the new wheels!

It is sort of unofficial but its the first sunday every month. I would expect the first one to be in April but there may be a few brave souls in March. In the summer it gets crazy packed. I remember in the late 90s it was at a different location and was like all older vintage sportbikes and ducatis and jap sport bikes but probably no more than 100 people. Last year I'd estimate about 1200 people or so in June or July. Littered with "custom" Harleys and what not but you still see occasional boneheads like myself rolling in on a SUMO with jacked up leathers and moto boots on.
The cop in the vid actually came up to bullshit with us. Said he had a DR650 sumo conversion. That was me he rolled up behind and I was like "really? WTF?" I had spent a couple two tree minutes in handcuffs down at Deals Gap a month prior, so I was thrown off when he said "whats up guys? Nice bikes!"
Feel free to PM me if you'd like to link up with us for street or dirt riding. I ride some great single track stuff on the WR.

The only fitment issue I had was the front wheel seals were on the wrong sides. Had to flip them. I put Michelin Pilot "Pure" tires on. Got a 160 rear on with no clearance issue and it is not ballooned out. I suspect a street tire in a 160 would be ballooned out and not as narrow. The measurements vary from manufacturers but I prefer a sticky ass tire since I probably run 95% on the street with the SUMO wheel setups.

Always wanted to do the Ephrata breakfast ride. My mother lives in maple grove. Ever go to pagoda?

Haha i used to take chicks up there to...uhh..enjoy the view. These days Id be packin the 9mm before I even enter Reading. Ive watched the hill climb there a couple times as well. Had a couple friends running cars on that.

Pagoda is moving to up 422 because the dump next door bought their property. New track and facilities! We just got back from 3 weeks vacation there. Forgot how much I missed my favorite back roads, wawa, and shady maple buffet lol
