• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

250 PRIMARY GEARS CAN I PICK YOUR BRAINS?

I AM LOOKING TO RUN 250 PRIMARY GEARS IN MY 1981 430 CR.

PURPOSE FOR DOING THIS IS TO SPIN THE MOTOR FASTER AS I AM USING A COMPRESSION RELEASE.

DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT YEARS ARE COMPATABLE WITH THE 81 430 CR?

IS THERE A DIFFERANCE BETWEEN THE XC AND CR PRIMARY GEARS?

You can and it will spin it faster. You need a 250 primary crank gear and a 250 clutch gear, not sure of year compatability. No difference between XC and CR ratio, that is determined in the transmission. I looked last night and I dont have a extra set. Try Huskydogg I'm pretty sure he does. I have found alot of alignment problems with 250 primary gearing. I have had to machine .030/.040 off the back of the kicker gear on the clutch gear to improve alignment. This also gives better engagement with the kicker idler to clutch kicker gear. Doing that you have to add another washer to the clutch to take up the slack, end play to the snap ring.

Hi Darrell,
I can help you out with a set off an 84 250 WR if they will work for you (I don't know).

As you might recall I suggested you get the primary gear set from a four speed cr 500. Like the one they seem to call the silver streak. That will reduce the number of teeth on the engine sprocket by 4.

From my mix and match projects It seems that so long as you don't use 87-88 stuff (as thay would require you to change the front shaft in the tramsmission from what you have) somewhere around 1985 and on you would have to change the idler gear and kick start gear as well.

The water cooled dual shock 400 would be another opiton I will suggest without going to the extreme of 250 primary gearing. It is visually lots smaller on the front drive sprocket and the clutch sprocket is significantly larger than the clutch basket. Just from memory I do think that one has the later gear profile for starting. Just guessing the 400 in the mono shock frame probably has the same parts just don't have any of those myself.

The condition of the little gear on the back of the clutch at least in the bikes I have is a limiting factor.

I think 84 was the model year Husky went to the larger gear profile on the kicker gears. That would include the kicker gear on the back of the clutch which is attached to the primary driven gear. Some early ones were also updated as they failed. I have the service bulletin stating the year/serial numbers of the break.

Hello Ron,how did you do with our raging santa ana`s yesterday?
Do you have the clutch basket with the gear attached?

Hi Darrell,
We got through the winds okay no damage, how about you?
I have a 84 250WR that has become a donor bike. I used the crank out of it for another bike, the forks are on my sons 390CR and the SEM ignition is gone, but I should have everything else.

How much do you want for the primarygear and clutch basket with gear attached
Is the kicker gear the same as my 430?

Winds were howling up here,no damage though.

Hi Darrell,
I don't know about the kicker gear? I'll throw it in so you can compare them. If you need it as a set you'll be good to go. If you don't need it, it would make a great paper weight.
$75.00 delivered sound fair?
Thanks, Ron

I am going to get my jetting cleaned up first and if it still hard starting i will consider going with the 250 gears.
Does the clutch case on your 84 250 look like a 430 with the coarse spline and kickstarter retained by a snap ring?

Thanks,
Darrell

Hi Darrell,
Not sure if you got my response? I've been holding those primary gear parts for you, when ever you need them.
