  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Getting things done on the bike.

Some questions swecifically about the motor :
1. Like I posted before the P/O put a "boost bottle" on the intake manifold. I scrapped it, went back to stock. But I wondered if that was a popular perf. mod for the 250CR ?
2. P/O also enlarged the two intake slots in the back of the stock Mahle piston... he made them longer, removing aluminum from the top of each "slot" up to within about 3/8" of the ring groove.
Again.... was this a popular perf. mod for this bike?
3. Motor had Boyeson reeds in it.... naturally a popular thing to do.
4. Pipe and silencer is un-touched I believe.

Is there a source for motor performance mods on forum,... or on the web for this model? A place where knowledge of what was done to the '82 Factory 250 for Bigelow?

Thanks, dave

not sure where you can get that stuff Dave, boost bottles were a fad and im not sure if they are effective or not. im sure there are some port mods available and pro circuit were the guys to go to for Husky power increases.

Paul Rooney in Aus also knows his way around the husky engines but I don't have his contact details (Speedyauto does and he is on this forum)

Husqvarna parts.com had some factory bulletins and set up advice on the website so worth a scroll there

keep hunting....

i have performed this mod on the piston but we widened them...cuts down on longevity but it does make the mid and top rip

Thanks for steering me to the service bulletins ! Interesting.
There's one for the '82 250CR, (not terribly difficult to perform), and a different one for the '83 model, ( major work). Required pushing the CR liner out, buy and modify a WR liner, then pressing back into cyl. casting. Among other thing, it calls for adding two small exhaust ports to each side of stock ex. port. and grind out cyl. alum to tie them to main center port.
Looks like my P/O didn't do the '83 mods....rather he choose the easier '82 work, (my cyl. still has just one main ex. port). I see he did elongate the piston ports...raising them the 4.5mm, not sure if he did the other work.
Can't wait to ride my bike ...just to see how a '83 250 ran.

I have reeds, and did get Race Tech Gold Va

lve Emulators. The GV's were a noticeable improvement. Looking at porting and a pipe. Tech Ref posted earlier is good gouge. If you find a pipe let me know. Great bike. Post pics of yours.

Wow, your bike looks cool..... Husky's are so unique looking. (Bud's Creek huh?... been there about a thousand times).
I've got a lot of questions foryou..
- What model Renthal bars did you put on it? Low and double wall alum. 7/8' ?
- Seats a bit different.... whats it from?
- Have you had it long? What maint. items,(if any), do you need to "keep after"?
- I *need* a stock gastank... you wouldn't know of a spare sitting, possibly for sale?

I had searched long and hard and found my dream bike a few years back from Allen McKay "Leftcoast leftkicker" on the forum.
He had completely restored the bike to immaculate condition. (see attachment).
I raced it at Budds a few times before moving to Japan from 2010-2013.
Though I am back in VA it is stored in AZ (parents house). Rode it in Nov when I was back for a visit. Will have it brought back out (along with my 83 XC 500) in the spring.

Don't know the specifics on the bars.
It came with the original stock seat. I wanted to preserve (as well as reduce wear on the tank) so I found the Hi-flight seat online and installed for racing.
The only maint issue I have had was the plastic cap on one of the forks cracked while riding due to age. Fortunately I have a spare parts bike and was able to replace.
I have a spare stock tank from my parts bike (83 WR). It is in AZ right now, I plan on restoring (dent and needs paint).
My dad is currently re-painting the tank on my 83 XC 500 and then I will put him on task for the other tank (attached pics).
So no tank currently available but perhaps in the near future.
If you still ride at Budds, I will be back out there quite a bit come spring.
More than happy to share my limited knowledge with you at any time.

I last rode Budd's, their H/S event, in 2009. Before that I rode District 7 MX events a lot back in 1975-76-77. ( yeah, I an old fart.) Recently acquired vintage mx'ers are to satisfy my desire to re-own bike's I had at one time, (or similar).
Anybody on this website who frequented Budd's in those years might remember two guys, (my buddy too), on identical GP Husky's always there. I will *certainly* be there next year, as well as the vintage bike race up at Unadilla, NY,(in July ?) I was there spectating past summer .... had NO bike to race at the time.... major bummer. It was very cool.

Is the WR tank somewhat bigger than CR tank.... thinking a liter or so?.
dave

Raced Budds in April 09 on the CR.
I think you are correct on the tank size 12l WR, 10l CR according to parts manual.
Can't upload due to size but pulled it off tec ref

For those who didn't find the right pages.
Interesting the 2 exhaust ports from each side of
main exhaust !
Has someone tried ?
