• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

430 piston sizes

I need a 1st over 430 piston for my 82, does anyone know for sure if the watercooled 430 pistons
are the same as the aircooled. I've read 81-88 are the same, but don't want to make a $200 mistake.

I have more detailed postings you might be able to search up. The top to the pin is the same, the ring is closer to the top on the water cooled ones. The air cooled ones are heavier due to not having the cut outs and a longer wristpin. I think the mahle water cooled ones the wrist pin is too short as I have a few where it has oblonged the hole in the piston. The aftermarket skirts aren't exactly where the mahle ones are but the woosner ring to top dimention matches the later water cooled versions and the wristpin is a bit longer. Also the side cut out at the transfer is a bit higher on the water cooled one, almost positive without re checking.

The above comparison is for the origional mahle. During the cagiva era they must have made more pistons and sourced them elsewhere but packaged them using the part number in the 1988 sheet. I didn't check if the 420/430 air cooled have a different number. The way the skirts of these line up in the transfer cut outs fit the air cooled well but block a bit of transfer in the water cooled if I recall correctly.

I am sure you will be ok with that as long as you get a piston kit. Anther trick I picked up is to resleeve with the 400L/C sleeve, go through those oversizes, then bore up to 430 then pickup those oversizes as well. Just make sure you use aircooled piston clearance and not L/C

Right now my 430 engine is backburnered while I spruce up the herd members going up for sale. I found the std piston is acceptable for clearance but pocked on top from the bad con rod I replaced the crank for. Killer on that is I have to break down that crank to replace the stub ends. I asked on eBay before buying it about rod play and thread condition first Told all was well so bought it. Got it in and found the threads on both stubs were wrapped in tape. Figured the seller was protecting the threads. Turned out he was hiding them. I have had a hard time dressing the with a thread file and not making that much progress considering the stubs I took out of the 250 and 430 I broke down are premo for thread condition

I used to run an air cooled piston in my ´87 water cooled auto. I was told by the (then) agent that they were stronger due to the longer wrist pin. He was an ex ISDT Husky rider/team manager over the years so he knew what he was talking about. Just set it up with the correct clearance.
The only difference by using the a/c piston was slightly more vibration - of course that is all relative on a big bore Husky.
