  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

449/511 Stripped Oil Filter Cover - Removal Ideas?

River-Runner

Husqvarna
AA Class
The Good News: I knew I was rounding the edges of my stock oil filter cover last oil change and "did" have the advance planning to order the cool red Husky anodized cap from Bill's - it is on the garage floor.....
The Bad News: Trying to get the stock filter cover off, I have rendered it rounded and unusable. Now I cannot get a bite with a 22MM or a 7/8 inch socket to remove it.

How have people removed that cover when stripped? I'm on the way to the store to get a new vice grips, mine no longer has the grip cut/etched into the ends of the mouth to bite into the outside edges of the cover, they are worn down and smoothed out.

Get an old rag and and poke into the 7/8 socket. Tap the socket onto the filter cap hex head and you should just get enough grip to loosen, I've used this technique until I bought an anodized cap. Good luck :)

Use a flat screwdriver and hammer on edge of hex or round edge next to engine face to bite in and rotate it off,it worked for me;)

Dremel or file a couple of flats and grip it with those new vise grips. Could also see if you can tap it of slowly as described above. Good luck

Yes, and Mr. Mull is the proud winner of his choice of the biggest stuffed bear on the wall! His idea of tapping that frigging, ill designed and manufactured oil filter cover with a hammer and screwdriver worked like a charm. The next time I'm in Newcastle, I owe you a beer. Thanks very much.

Can't they make a part fit a standard metric socket? Wow.......

I'm glad it worked river....just wait 'til you try and remove or tighten the gear shifter, absolute genius, couldn't have put the bolt in a worse place myself !!!

Get some freeze of wart remover and cool down the cover with it so it shrinks enough to loosen the threads a little then have a go with the new vice grips.

Oh, I see you got it :)

Mull that was great Idea. Worked perfect. Replaced the stock POS with a ZipTy Magnetic cover. It uses a Standard 3/8" Extension for a ratchet to remove it.
