• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

450CR Ignition confusion

Matt Kile

Husqvarna
Hello all,

I have what I believe to be a '74 450CR. I'm not certain of the year since the data plate is missing from the engine, but it came to me in an MK frame.

I've always been confused about the ignition on this bike. It came to me with Bosch ignition on it, mounted on an adapter with a light steel flywheel. I've done LOTS of research and could not find one mention of these bikes having Bosch ignition. I cannot get a proper spark out of this ignition, trying for hours with different advance and dwell settings, and I suspect the points. It only sparks if I turn the motor over really fast by rotating the back wheel....way faster than I can kick it. It also makes a nice blue spark if I turn the rotor BACKWARDS by hand, but not forwards!

I did some research, and found that 73-74 WR and CR 450s used Femsa ignition. From eBay, I bought a Femsa points plate and flywheel for a 74 450CR. It came today, and the flywheel is far too large for the crankshaft!

Can anyone please help me understand what I have going here? Perhaps my engine is older than I thought and I need a different Femsa or maybe a Motoplat to make it right? Does anyone know where this Bosch ignition might have come from? Thanks so much in advance for any help!

Doesn't sound like the Bosch is the original. Having an Ignition that only makes spark at fast Speeds is a common problem. This the main reason open class bikes are hard to start. When You add a compression release it makes it start easier to start because You spin the engine faster. Can't help you with the Crank size but I'm sure somebody can.
