• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

ok here's a question ...long story but i have an 86 bottom end with 84 barrel and head ....now i lost 3rd gear so engine strip it was , inside i have found a couple gears that are a bit worn . now the price of these gears and trying to get hold of them is not cheap . mine is a 5 speed but on ebay across the pond i see one of your fellow countrymen is flogging a complete 6 speed set .
so my question is can i simply remove my 5 speed internals and replace with the 6 speed set !! i cant see why not but which one of you clever fellows is gonna agree or disagree ....
many thanks
graham

question is you riding type or style, if you need a good gear spread a wide ratio 6 speed is handy, the motocross bikes came with 5 speeds as how fast were you planning to go
the CR500 had a close ratio 6 speed have one of those very nice

I believe the early CR500's were a 4 speed and later a 5 speed. I will recommend against a 6 speed even though it will fit. (You will need the complete set up including the primary gears, shift forks and drum.) The gears in the six speed are quite narrow to fit the cases. They are suitable to a 250cc motor, but the 430 will eat its way through 3rd gear (most used) in a year or two and a 500 is likely to devour it in just a few serious rides. I believe Vintage Husky still has the CR500 transmission parts. I know he is not cheap, but the parts are top quality. (He bought Malcolm Smiths inventory among others) Failing that everything shows up on ebay eventually.

An 1986 cr 500 Husqvarna most likely will have 33/76 primay drive with 5 speeds. I believe the six speed 500 cc husqvarna bikes of this section all have 39/70. The 430 six speed seems to have started out at 39/70 but later the crank sprocket got smaller. First gear as you can see is built into the input shaft. Pretty much anything 240/250 and up two or four stroke should fit so long as you change the drums. The input shaft changed in 1987 so that would need stuff in the clutch area switched. The widest ratio six speed lived on in the olers single cam sction some of the gears are still the same part number not sure about the shafts and drums.

For amusement look to the 1984 teck data and the six speed cr 500 and note the ratios and part numbers are the 250 wr and xc of that year.

I have had quite a few 6 speeds and after too many years to remember, only lost one gear box, I was in the trees on a single track on an XC430 when I accidentally landed on the shifter under heavy acceleration and took out a gear
had CR500's and XC's never had a gear box issue with them
so just my opinion, if you want a six speed have fun, I personally prefer them get 5 good gears and 1 overdrive gear for the open terrain

I expect you have already made contact with Andy at the HVA Factory. But if you havn't, he has loads of NOS Husky gears. Again, not cheap, but you get what you pay for.
If you are going to Telford in Feb, Andy will be there, along with Charlie from "Husqvarna Vintage, and also Jef Bens from Belgium. If you contact any of them now then they can bring the parts with them for you to collect.

many thanks for the replys guys , i am hoping to keep the 5 speed box but money will talk in the end, so not ruling out the 6 speed option . i have looked on hva website but andy doesnt have what i want on there , will send him an email .
once again guys thanks .
