• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

500 XC or CR?

Husqvarna
A Class
I've just bought a 86 WR 400 that has a liquid cooled 500 engine & I don't know wether it's a CR or XC motor.
What I do know is,
it's a 6 speed,
it has markings on the ignition that say "79 CR 250" written on it
(probably why I am having spark problems)

What I'd like to know is how do I identify a 500CR from a 500XC engine?
Is the 79 250 ignition compatible for the engine?
I have spark at the plug but the motor needs to spin faster than what is able to be generated from kicking,
What could be causing this? (I made an adaptor to spin the engine with my elec drill)

Any info will go along way,
Thanks,
Speedy.

That is the type of ignition for an xc generally the cr has an internal rotor. I don't think they had a 500 in 1988 but I am also not so sure as your post implies all liquid cooled 500 xc and cr have specific features for all of 85,86,87. Some of the water cooled cr 500 have 5 speed and 33 instead of 39 on the engine drive gear. There are numbers to check stamped into the case. From reading on here and looking an my 81 420 crank it looks like the location of the keyway for earlier than 82 or so and later differs by perhaps 15 to 20 degrees. Since you have spark I would suggest putting a timing light on it, or even putting a pin in the timing hole and determining if the spark is in a logical spot before top center of the stroke. You might be able to modify the slots or get a different base plate if it bolts on.

According to Husqvarna-parts.com
here's 85-87 500 motor numbers (far right column)
1985 500 CR CP-01000 0991 or 0993
1985 500 XC XP-01000 992
1985 500 AE WO-100001 2090

1986 500 Motocross CP-08000 2061
1986 500 CrossCountry XP-08000 2063

1987 500 CR CP20000+ --
1987 500 XC XP20000+ 2152

But Like Fran wrote it should have a internal rotor..I'd agree.. Looks like someone put a earlier air cooled mag & flywheel on a water cooled motor, which may or may not work.

Thanks to Fran...k., ruwfo & Bryll,
I appreciate the help with the knowledge you have,

So here's further to what I found,
Stamped on the head stem is "HUSQVARNA 1 WP08266"
Stamped on the engine is "0991 0558"
& the clutch basket drive gear has "427"
Do these numbers look correct?

What I also found was a scored & dented clutch cover, a broken lug & bolt for the pressure plates,
a missing tooth from the back of the clutch basket & chipped peices from the kick start mechanism.
I believe the scoring was from the broken bolt/lug from the clutch & not the other bolts (hopefully) & to much force on the lug to snap it, but as to the rest I'm a little puzzled as to how the teeth where broken.
So as it stands I think the cases are CR500 with an XC 6 speed tranny, according to how I read the info above(is that right)?
Now to find some spare parts & start putting it together.
Thanks,
Speedy
Any more info out there?

I'm never surprised at the amount of damage you can find , i've seen a guy bring in a modern 250F where the piston turn in the bore (sideways!), boy did that make a mess.

Anyway yes numbers says it a 85 500CR motor , not sure about the WP frame # did you mean XP?

I'd very careful check to make sure the cases behind the clutch basket doesn't have any damage, i've seen them crack.

The Kicker pawl (far right pic) are fairly ease to find, you can use any 250-500 1981 thru 88,
if i remember right. Not sure about clutch basket (2nd& 3rd pic), more then likely same as the 400,430 & 500.

Make sure u flush the transmission a bunch of times or you'll have more problems when you get replacement parts.

The literature always says they reserve the right to change any specification. Assuming the australian models stayed true to the teck data sheet I would say it is just as likely that a case half or both cases were switched. The wear on the clutch fingers and on the small gear on the back of the clutch is rather minor compared to most if not all stuff I have. Kicking back can crack the primary drive side case. Kicking back may well be why that tooth broke off if not something getting wedged in there. It appears someone welded on that little pawl to build it up, maybe not. I always figured those towers for the clutch spring bolts broke from leveraging against the fold over washer however you don't have the fold over washer the earlier snap ring. I havn't seen a broken one of those. If it was an 87 inside it would have the fold over washer. I would count the teeth on the gear with the missing tooth as that and the intermediate gear and the starter gear got slightly modified around 85. That piece with the 70 tooth primary drive gear and the little one is one of the most needed pieces to keep these things going I don't know if it is still produced or not.
