  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

I have always wanted to build a lackey replica but have struggled to find one in the condition that I could work with as I wanted to do it myself. This came up recently so I drove 90 miles to find it was nothing like what the guy told me. It wouldn't start, and had had a repair to the back of the cases in the usual place. And the clutch cable bracket on the cases is a bit suspect. But on a plus side the wheels are good, the bike has original tyres on it. I dont think its been painted other than the tank and for what I ended up giving him for it I could have broke it and made money. Anyway got it home, it had a belting spark, and tons on conpression. I cleaned the carb put some wd40 in the barrell and she started 5th kick. So here we go I will keep you updated as I go along. cheers mark VINTAGE RACEWEAR.

As I recall having seen Lackey in action at the first Southwick national in 1976, the 250 looked like a 77 250CR and his 360CR for the GP was similiar with leading axle forks and Fox Air Shocks. If I can find the photos of Kent Howerton's 76 championship bike I will post it as it would be nearly identical to Brad's bike.

These are shots of the actual bike rode by and still owned by Kent Howerton

Cheers for your interest. Howertons bike had a profab arm and was a 390 I think, I have seen a good replica over here in the uk, see picture. It has a fabricated arm and later forks. I may be wrong but I think lackey had a standard arm, and fork extensions

The Howerton replica in the far right picture was up for sale a little while ago, it still maybe. Built by Rod Spry, it is a corker. Goes like hell too. Just that I think it's a little small for the present owner (if he still has it).

Hi Ian, yes I did contact him about selling it, and it was worth the money he was selling it for. Its just to me the fun is tracking down a project, and the parts, and building it yourself and then riding it. Even though it does end up costing you twice as much to do it. Hey ho, you would think at 50 we would have learned by now, but wouldnt the world be a boring place lol.

I was trying to compare some swingarm dimension off my bike for another guy and nothing seemed correct. I thought mine was stock according to the seller (original owner).
Later I found a picture of Kent Howerton's bike and noticed my rear shock mounts are moved back too.
The guy I bought it from said he bought it new that way, with the Works Performance shocks?
Maybe a dealer mod?

The site I got the Howerton pics from stated it was a 360 not 390 as it was a modified production bike which made Howerton's 76 championship quite the achievement in those days.

Ongoing progress, found some foxs, 15 1/8 inch. I couldnt find the right length from anyone for lackys bike so started with these. Could be a little long but the chain runs on the slider loose so could be ok. The foxs hold air top and bottom so just ordered seals and wipers, but need the shock bolt holes taking out a bit. Got a period seat cover off flea bay, seems ok will fit it later as need a little work on the seat base. Found some 3 inch period extenders for the forks so the bike is levelled up. Cleaned the tank off, still a bit to go. Used nitromors stripper. Engine is out and took it to Husqvarna Vintage for a crank, got a good deal, but cant put it back together yet as I need the clutch bracket fitting from hva. I also had some bear trap pegs from andy very cool. I will keep you updated. Mark VINTAGE RACWEAR.

Sorry i meant to say rod not crank. The big end had gone and the rod had flaking.

I have a mix and match project going on.If you could take a few minutes and count the # of teeth on each gear.I have 360 motor that had no ID tag and no ignition.I'm trying to find out If I have a cr or wr.Thanks

Both are 6 speeds.I did some checking on the parts pages.Do me a favor and just count the teeth on the double joined gear that is on the clutch shaft. That would be 5th and 6th gear.If you interested I have a swing arm that was modified to Howerton shock location. You really don't want to run your swing arm at that angle. You will have problems with chain slack.

Hi I have spoken to a husky specialist who says the CR twin gear says 405 on it. Not sure what the wr says though, the swinging arm on my project has a bracket already welded underneath the arm for a chain tensioner, with another bracket for a spring to get tension on it. Hoping it will work. I would be interested in a picture and price of your arm though. thanks.

You very likely have the correct length on the Fox Shocks but the lower mounts need to be moved closer to rear axle. The back is a few inches too high and you need to watch how much tube engagement you have in the sliders. You note that in the pics of Howerton's bike I posted he has leading axle forks and the lower shock mount is close to rear axle. That was very close to the GP bike Lackey used except Brad's was likely a 77 390 prototype with Fox shocks much as Mikkola's 74 bike became the basis of the 1975 GP replicas

Good pic I havnt seen that before. You are probably right I have struggled to find pics of lackey on the husky. I was trying to resemble a bit of a mix of what I could find with the pictures at the top with him behind the bike and others like this, but this may be him on a 250.

That shot was likely from 1975. I have a slide somewhere from the 1976 Southwick national of Lackey that my father took of him. All the shots of Lackey showed the 250 version of the Howerton bike I posted before
