• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

82 430 ohlins lower shock mount bushings?

I'll ask Drew. I'm sending him the '82 suspension for service this Winter. And when we spoke last, I said the lower bushes were shot and he said he had a fix.

That would be great cause I have 5 pairs that I am doing. Just starting on first pair.

Thanx for your help!

Ok I ordered the brass bushings from the buzzard racing guy on ebay and they came incredibly fast...well just a lot faster than i thought. I just opened the package.. I gotta check later on the fit. It was $40 + $4 shipping for top and bottom for both shocks.. $11 each.. It looks like it will work well...we'll see. He uses them on his Maico. Hopefully it works well.

I think those would be fine in some bikes, but the reason the Husky's have the rubber in the lower bushing and the heim joint at the top is the shock needs to pivot inwards/outwards as the wheel moves through the travel. I dont think that solid bronze bushing will allow enough movement, but I could be wrong.

They would be great in the '80 and older swing arms or any other bike with the traditional style bottom mount, I'm not sure I would use that on the '81 up side mount shocks.

Yea I was thinking maybe that might be the case a little but the shaft just twists.. but idk. It looks good and he's been using it on his maico which kind of looks similar.. I'm going to try it now since I got it . I'll let everyone know how good or bad it works.

Hi All
The replacement shock eye barrings we have cost $24.95 each side. They are Heim barrings or spherical barrings. come with rubber seals and bushing for either 8mm 0r 12mm depending on year bike. 908 637 6385

I have old Maico's myself also, I have moved the shocks forward top and bottom on the old early 70'71' or so Square barrel frames like they did on the production Radial 74'75' engined bikes from the mid 70's. To increase travel. This required a major airbox modification as well. it also took some much heavier spring rates to correct the spring rate due to the increased leverage. My 77' had the lay down shocks and everything changed after that big time.

If your shocks came with the straight non spherical bearings it should be fine if the width of the upper and lower shock mounts are at exactly the same width. I believe some of the early lay down cantilever shocks on some of the mid 80's Huskys were actually leaning in and mounted narrower at the top than on the swingarm mounts below. They did this to narrow the bike when standing up, I guess. Check it out and measure with a tape . The shocks from what I remember seemed to be mounted to the outside of the tubing on the swingarm rather than over the top of the tubing with gussets and double shear mounts like the earlier Maico's used to be.
If they're not the same width top and bottom. You will definately need the spherical bearings or it will bind and either break the mounts, eat up the bushings immediately. Or wear the holes out to an oval shape in the mounts. The worse case scenario, break the shock eyelet off all together. I would put the spherical ball bearings in there and be safe. On both ends if you can.

My old 77' Maico had the laydown shock set up and the frame is wide when you stand up because of the upper shock mounts being so forward and behind the bulge in the side panel but the shocks are mounted to the upper part of the swingarm above the oval tubing with long gussets on the inside and a second double shear mount on the outside. So they are the same width at the top and bottom. Just enough to clear the chain. If the mounts are at a different width top and bottom the fulcrum changes through out the travel. Take the springs off the shocks and check it out by moving it up and down. Just to make sure nothing binds to be on the safe side. The tape measure should tell you for sure though.

Look I don't have an old 2 shock Husky but some of my buddies do and if I remember correctly they leaned in at the top.

Just thought I would put in my thoughts here.
If the mounts are the same width top and bottom it shouldn't make any difference what bearing or bushing you put in as long as you grease them and keep an eye on them wearing out. The brass type are usually "oilite bronze" which is impregnated with oil right in the bronze. It actually gets slick when you heat it up. I have a lathe and have used this stuff many times for bushings. The "Oilite Bronze" is nothing new but the "Heim", "Alignaball", spherical bearing is the ideal way to go. Get out that tape measure and check to make sure. Please post and let us know.

Thanks.. I'll try what I have but if it doesn't look right. I'll be ordering from you. I wasn't sure where to go earlier. I just ordered the first place that I could find something available.
